Hi all,

I've been a loyal AVG user for many years, but I'm increasingly frustrated with its attempts to rule my digital life.

I don't want it scanning for unprotected sensitive files, or telling me about issues that it can fix if I pay.
I'm using my laptop at home on a home WiFi network.

Is there another option that is both unobtrusive and safe?

Loyal to me would be paying my way if something had served me well.

If you want something for nothing, use Microsoft Defender, formerly known as Windows Defender

I've used most of the choices mentioned, but I'm back to just using Windows Defender. It's improved over the years and is a decent AV solution. I also have Malwarebytes since I got a lifetime subscription some time back for peanuts, between the two I feel I have sufficient protection. I also don't randomly go looking for trouble like some folks on the Internet, probably why I feel safe. :LOL:

Since you asked, I now use and like ESET Home Security Premium. I have used many different paid AV solutions since I started with computers in 1988, including Norton, McAfee, Bitdefender, Kaspersky, etc.

ESET has a small footprint. It does not drain computer resources like Bitdefender does, which also had many frequent bugs - just check out their Forums.

ESET was top dog in the latest annual AV-Comparatives testing.

Just my two cents. The choice of an antivirus program is a personal choice. There is no one "best" antivirus program for everyone.

I really like Panda Free, it is not perfect, but with a safe DNS, it works, just disable Panda News in Settings.
Panda is pretty much the only real cloud AV I know, thus it is light, but it still performs well in AV tests.

Sounds like you are using the free version. If so, Bitdefender has a free version; if you still don't like that and want something free, Microsoft Defender may be the only other good choice. On the other hand, MD has been rated as a top product in all the "independent" test labs now.
