File History isn't working anymore!

Hi there,
File History was working fine until June, but after deciding to update, I ran into a surprise: it no longer works!
It doesn't recognize the internal drive anymore, and it fails to recognize other drives I try to use as well.
I uninstalled both KB5129195 and KB5124008 as suggested; the app started working again after the uninstall, but perhaps *too* well—it gets stuck in a loop, repeatedly restoring the same files and filling up the drive. Also, if I click "Restore," it warns me that a download is in progress, even though the download has actually finished.
Any help?

it looks like the latest update has caused problems with File History
also Microsoft has depreciated File History

The KB5124008 caused my File History to stop 13/14 Sept, date corresponds, that was a re-install of that one, a subsequent KB5129195 (26200.9457) out of schedule update did not fix it. There is still a bug.

Nothing seems to fix it, deleting configuration files, re-entering network/drive/folder info etc, nothing, still does not work, just stops on searching for drives.

The Preview update KB5124010 is suppose to have a fix for File History.

[File History] This update addresses an issue where File History might fail to back up or restore files to an external drive or network location. Affected devices might incorrectly display a “Reconnect your drive” message even when a compatible backup drive is connected and working properly.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, 1920x1080 touchscreen, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine. Okay, I installed the recommended updates and it works, but it stays active in the background; the "Restore files" option won't open because it's constantly stuck on the initial backup process.
Even after stopping it, simply clicking on "File History" restarts the service, preventing me from restoring any files.
It's a mystery...

Preview Update KB5124010 has fixed it for mine. Functionality restored and various sample files from up to 15 months ago can be restored.
Just a 10 day gap from 13-23 Sept.

I recently installed a new drive as my backup device, activated File History after this update and it seems to work by not giving errors when selecting the drive but it doesn't seem to be making any backups of my files, the file history folder size remains about 2mb and this is after many hours

FH will only backup any new files since the last FH backup so there will be no files backed up if you have not edited or created new files.

I agree. I created a new file. FH looked like it was making a new backup but the new file wan't included. Typical shoddy MS software engineering!

No new changes as yet to test, that will take a few days.
Mine is set to a 12 hour schedule and it has been less than 25 hours since the update and overnight.

As a final issue, File History has recently stopped detecting the default hard drives. What can I do? I’ve already tried various potential fixes but haven't found a solution...the only action I performed was chkdsk /f /r.
