Solved Finding the right laptop

Private seller on ebay. Who said it was a replacement laptop from a high street store after the first one developed a fault. Said they had replaced it with a new one (the one I bought). But it has Windows 10 2004 installed so can't be "new".

I'm sure if you got ebay to step in they would help resolve the issue pretty quickly
Also if paid with paypal can help get your money back.

Thanks. Yes I did ask nicely to send it back and got a very stroppy response. So I opened a case to return it and got an even stroppier response - telling me if Ebay did agree I could return it for a refund, the seller would deduct 30% because it had been used. It might be difficult to get it returned because the seller did transfer the guarantee to me. On the other hand easier for them to return it under guarantee than me, because they had already replaced it under guarantee once. I've only just bought it and they might say - take it back to the seller. I don't know. I have never had such a hostile response from an ebay seller before though!

Contact the local trading standards, the item is obviously dangerous and so the seller should be liable to refund or replace the item one of suitable safety and quality

Yep I have done that. Seller is clearly trying to intimidate me not to escalate saying if ebay do say return it for a refund, they will deduct 30% because it's been used. Erm - how do you not find a fault without turning it on?!

Cases like this is why I avoid Ebay like the plague for anything that's important or expensive, how are you supposed to find out if a laptop is defective if you don't turn it on? Probably find the guarantee is fake as well.

Yep that just occurred to me about the guarantee. Strangely I have only ever had one dodgy purchase on ebay before. And have sold a lot of laptops and netbooks on ebay and never had a complaint or a return asked for (because I know they're ok!). It's slightly awkward as the seller is quite local and actually dropped it off rather than posting it. So might come over and lynch me!

Hi,
Where are the temperature reading you get while it's operating on your workload ?

Hwinfo64 is a good utility top use for evidence of thermal issues
When you first open hwinfo check the box to run Sensors only and you'll get a single large page with everything.
Or you can use coretemp as well it just gives basic core temp readings

I used Open Hardware Monitor. It was the cores that had the high temps. Not massively high - 60% for some just over 50% for others. I've had laptops showing 90% before now but none of them got as hot as this piece of molten metal!

Nope. Haven't switched it on again :) What is a good temperature monitor? I used to use speccy but that doesn't do temperatures any more.

Guess I lean to coretemp for just normal day to day stuff
It shows core temps on taskbar so easy to see what's going on 14 cores gets a little much though lol

:). Yep. Well I've been using laptops on my lap for the last 10 years with no problem. But they've changed. Not lappable any more it seems. The HP Spectre X360 is actually very lappable. But uncomfortable to use. It does seem ridiculous that you have to buy a tray to use a laptop.

This is a 14" Asus Zenbook. Have a look at the keypad if this is too thin for you. The laptop itself is not really too thin for me.

Oh and the other thing. Static and a kind of buzzing feel from the bottom metal part of the laptop. Feels really weird.

Looks good. Does it get very hot? I'm thinking of getting another HP Pavilion DM4 for £100. Might go a year or two. Nothing wrong with the one I have and works really well - except the screen is hanging off by the hinges. I've been given a bit more money for the pot so could actually buy something new now - but really not sure if there's anything that suits!
