OS
Ubuntu/Arch/Proxmox/Windows7/8/10/11
Strange problem on one computer saving a page or file with Firefox
Computer Asus - No recent hardware changes
Windows 11
22H2 (OS Build 22621.170
Digital licence
No warnings in Device manager
Ran a full Ram test using a Linux live boot USB - No errors
Ran Chkdsk - no errors
Tried both local non-Microsoft and Microsoft accounts
Patched to current version
Scanned for virus - none found
SFC Scan no errors
Firefox 64bit 113.0.1 current version

I installed Windows 11 in a virtual machine and Firefox works as expected, at least for the short test.

It was working fine. Then recently trying to save a page in custom location e.g. not Downloads but say My Documents it just crashes as soon as I try and create a directory.

Other browsers - Edge, Chrome, Brave all work fine.
Other computers running Firefox work fine.

I turned on full audit in application log
  • I have tried safe mode - blank profile no extensions - same crashes
  • Firefox refresh, no extensions, no login to sync - same crashes
  • Uninstalled Firefox, cleaned registry, rebooted
  • Re-installed Firefox - tried above - same crashes
  • Nothing obvious in event log, except Firefox closed abnormally and generated a report.
  • Tried a new local user (user and admin)
Fresh Firefox install - same issue as above.
(Other browsers work fine)

Ideas?

Hi,
It seems you have worked a bit on resolving the issue already.
A few questions:
Prior to uninstalling Firefox, did you look at the content of Mozilla\firefox\Crash Reports ?
You cleaned the reg but did you also wipe out the profiles folder?
Have you attempted the same with a Beta\Dev or nightly version of Firefox?

Sorry I should have said I tried the usual

I looked in about:crashes and in AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Crash Reports
and copied the .dmp and extra files to another drive.

I tried reading the how to read a crash report and check this signature
as as every time I've tried it it says Zero hits.

I've also looked in the top crashes on
I raised it as a bug on Bugzilla

I'll try the Beta and Dev editions and report back.
