Solved Firefox: How to always use the system print dialog?

Any system tweak requires Admin rights. What if you login to your standard user account and then right-click on the browser shortcut and select Run as Administrator. You should then be allowed to do the tweaks you want and they would be valid for the standard user account.

Tried that, but no joy, I'm afraid. There must be a way of manually editing it, but I don't know it.

Use your Admin account..., or, switch your user account from Standard to Admin.

The strategy I have always adopted is to use a user account for everyday use, and only use an admin account when absolutely necessary. This I think was Microsoft advice in the early days, and I have stuck with it. Maybe I am wrong in this now. When you get to my age, changing the way you do things is difficult.....

Would be interested to hear what the current thinking now is.

Yes, this is the idea, use a standard account for extra security, but it is very limiting and you have to Run as Administrator a lot and gets annoying. So you use an Administrator account to be able to do more with less Run as Administrator.

Not sure..., everyone has different situations...,
me, I'm the only user of my PC's so, I've only ever used one Admin account.

Most of users at home have an Admin account in Windows because this is the default and they don't bother to change. In Linux and Mac OS the default is a standard user account.

So am I right in thinking the upshot of all this is, for user account situations, it is not possible to achieve the legacy system print dialogue with Firefox?

Perhaps..., but, I don't have a User account, so, I can't verify that! 🤷‍♂️

I think Keith meant he can't do the reg edit as Standard User.
I wonder if the same edit is done in HKLM, it would flow over?

I didn't mention Registry Editor. I said to load Firefox or other browser as Admin to be able to change the value in about:config. Also he should run regedit as Admin to be able to change values in Registry. Common sense. Anything that involves system tweaking must be done with Admin rights, otherwise it won't let you.

Open Command Prompt as Administrator via right click...

... paste the code from Post #75 into the Command Prompt window, press Enter...

... it will then say The operation completed successfully, close Command Prompt. You're done.

Hello!

In previous versions of Firefox there was a flag to show the system print dialog by default, rather than go through the Firefox print dialog first. However this flag doesn't work in latest Firefox versions (such as 97). Does anyone knows how to restore this feature? I frequently have to select a different paper type or paper source and it is not convenient having to go through the Firefox print dialog first, scroll down and then click to use the system print dialog. I would prefer opening the system print dialog when clicking the print icon.

Thank you in advance.
I always highlight what I want to print, Ctrl C, open Word or Libre Office Writer, Ctrl V, then print from Word or Libre.

It's not exactly what you want, but works much quicker for me.

Yes, I can run that. In fact, I did this previously as confirmed in post 75.
I'm getting confused by suggestions to run reg edit as post 94, and whether I should be running my user or admin account.
Kinda lost in all the permutations........
