Solved Firefox: How to always use the system print dialog?


I know this doesn't fix the original question but it does make it quicker to get to the System Print Dialogue. It is an alternative to @johnlgalt suggestion in #36. Photo shows Firefox print dialogue and it explains all: -

Haven't yet seen a reliable workaround to get the system print dialog in single click or key combination in Firefox. The hack in Microsoft Edge still works but I read they changed some stuff in version 102 and broke PDF printing. A simple fix is to downgrade to version 101 or earlier and block upgrades until they fix it. Or you can save the PDF on disk and then open it with Adobe Reader or other application to print it. Is there any setting to automatically open with default PDF viewer when you click a PDF link instead of a new tab in Edge?

Associate the file type with the program that you want to use. Do it from the properties of a .PDF file itself if you cannot do it in the System --> Apps --> Default Apps settings.

Default PDF viewer is Adobe Acrobat. I discovered that when I download the PDF it then automatically opens with Adobe Reader, but when I click on a PDF link it first opens in s new tab. Any trick to open directly in Adobe Reader?

A more careful look into Microsoft Edge Settings revealed that I can set in PDF settings to always download PDFs and open with default PDF Viewer. Now when I click our courier's vouchers they open automatically in Adobe Reader instead of a new tab and I can print them. Useful workaround but I would like the PDF printing bug to be fixed.

I have to report that the bug with PDF printing in Microsoft Edge is now fixed. I upgraded to version 102.0.1245.44 and it now prints all PDFs OK. Just upgrade to the latest version to fix the bug.

Can someone please confirm, one way or the other, if it is possible to get the system print dialogue in Firefox. Currently running 122.0.1. and printing is driving me nuts.
Looks like everyone has jumped ship to Edge or whatever. Should I do the same?:rolleyes:

In Firefox I am using the extension "Print Edit WE" and always print first to a PDF, so that I can watch the result, before sending it to the printer.

The problem is, that there as well many sites cannot be printed properly. But at least you can see that befor you print...

Often I don't even really print the page, but save the pdf, for instance specs of things I order at webshops.

Thanks for reminding us. After many upgrades of Firefox the setting had switched to the default "false". I switched that to true again and I saw the probably new Windows 11 print dialog, not the good old classic print dialog we were used to, but it should work as well.

Thanks for reminding us. After many upgrades of Firefox the setting had switched to the default "false". I switched that to true again and I saw the probably new Windows 11 print dialog, not the good old classic print dialog we were used to, but it should work as well.

My print.prefer_system_dialog is set to true

But I dont get the system print dialogue.

This is similar to mine. It must be the new Windows 11 equivalent of the old classic print dialogue. You get the same if you click on "Print using system print dialogue" on the default Firefox interface.

CTRL+P will give you the print dialogue. The default (without changing the value) is a Firefox print dialogue without all the printer settings. If you scroll down you see "Print with the system print dialogue". The hack is to bypass the Firefox dialogue and go directly to the system print dialogue which is different from the old one we remember from Windows 7, 8 and 10 but should have the same functionality. The whole point is having access to the printer settings, such as print quality, both sides printing etc, that you don't have from the Firefox print dialogue. The same is true for Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome. If you need access to printer settings you must use the system print dialogue.
