Firefox update restart issue

With the last 4 or 5 Firefox updates I've found that when it shows the button "Restart to update Firefox", it doesn't install the update. Checking About Firefox page it still shows the "Restart to update Firefox" button. Doesn't matter how many times I press it. I have to literally do a Windows Restart and then when I go to Firefox as if by magic, it pauses for a few moments and it completes the update. Is this a common problem?

There is bug report here for that kind of issue:

1941931 - Firefox won't update on restart; it must be closed and then reopened

RESOLVED (bytesized) in Toolkit - Application Update. Last updated 2025-07-08.

At the end of the report there is an interim solution which appears to work for some & not others - by toggling the about:config setting of app.update.multiSessionInstallLockout.enabled to false. This might help until Firefox fixes that bug.

(It also appears to affect some users of Thunderbird as well, as it shares some common code with Firefox).

Thanks das10. I've reset Firefox (which also fixed another glitch I had and freed up a fair bit of disk space too). So I'll wait for the next update to see if it has fixed it. If not, I'll try the work around you posted to see if that fixes it. (y)

Yup, I sometimes get that behavior now and have to manually close and restart it for the update to take effect.
