Windows Update Restart (4min) what does this mean?

Does this mean that Windows will restart automatically in 4 minutes when the PC is in idle (no user interaction) or it means that the actual restart time will take 4 minutes to perform?

Can someone please explain this in detail?

It’s just an automatic restart after an update. It’s usually calculated on the times you least use the PC.

4 minutes is when it will instigate the restart, not the time it takes to perform any actions as a result of the update.

After Windows restarts (either because you allow Windows Update to restart automatically, or will manually do it later), it will take 4 minutes of offline processing before you return to the logon screen or desktop.

Many Windows files can't be updated while the system is running, so files are switched either during shutdown or startup. WU is estimating 4 min. to complete this task during reboot.

I find it impossible to believe that the restart process could possibly correctly estimate the time it will take or for how long it will be offline.

Still a bit confused here and I am sorry.

So 4 minutes means that the machine will restart in 4 minutes or does it mean the actual restart time to complete installing
the updates will take 4 minutes?

I get this this, especially in light of the fact that MS cannot even accurately estimate how long it will take to copy a bunch of files :-). But this at least gives you a starting point. If you saw an estimate of 30 minutes rather than 4 minutes, then you might be more likely to delay rebooting to a time where you won't need the PC for at least 30 minutes. So, it least allows you to have some rough idea of how long the updates will take to apply letting you make a decision of whether to apply those updates right away or defer them.

As mentioned, it is indeed an estimate of how long the reboot will take. When it gives you an indication of when the restart will occur, it will look like the screenshot below (the "22 hours" here).
