First set of Windows app updates rolling out to Windows Insiders for Windows 11

  • Staff
Hello Windows Insiders! Today we are rolling out the first set of updates for several apps that come included as part of Windows 11. The following app updates are rolling out to Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel at first.

Snipping Tool

The new Snipping Tool icon in Windows 11.

In Windows 11, both the classic Snipping Tool and Snip & Sketch apps have been replaced by a new Snipping Tool app that represents the best experiences of both apps in the next evolution of screen capture for Windows.

The Snipping Tool for Windows 11 includes new visuals that build off the classic app with added functionality like the WIN + SHIFT + S keyboard shortcut from Snip & Sketch and richer editing. We’re also introducing a new settings page for Snipping Tool.

Taking a screenshot is super easy using the WIN + SHIFT + S keyboard shortcut! This will bring up the snipping menu with options to choose from including Rectangular Snip, Freeform Snip, Windows Snip, and Fullscreen Snip.

Note: If you have notifications turned off or Focus Assist on, you will not receive a notification pop-up after taking a screenshot. Your screenshot will still be copied to your clipboard, however. This will be fixed in a future update.

Once you’ve taken a screenshot, Snipping Tool provides editing tools for annotations, improved cropping, and more to edit your screenshots how you want.

And finally, Snipping Tool now honors your Windows theme! If you’re theme is dark mode, Snipping Tool will appear in dark mode! You can also choose which theme independently via the new settings page for Snipping Tool.

Try out the new Snipping Tool on Windows 11 and send in any feedback you have via Feedback Hub. We’re looking forward to future updates to Snipping Tool to address your feedback!

Calculator

The Calculator app icon.

The Calculator app now has a beautiful new look for Windows 11! It also includes a new app theme setting (just like Snipping Tool!) so that you can set the app in a theme different from Windows. Calculator has been rewritten in C# so that more people can contribute to it on GitHub!

Besides these, the Calculator app is packed with useful features. It’s the perfect tool to help you complete your math homework, manage your finances, plot, and analyze equations on a graph, and evaluate algebra, trigonometry, and complex math expressions!
  • Simple and easy to use standard calculator for all the basics, and a powerful scientific calculator for more complex math.
  • Programmer Mode offers rich functionality that is essential for programming and engineering.
  • Plot one or more equations in graphing mode and then analyze the graph to help identify key graph features, like the x- and y- intercepts.
  • Convert between more than 100 different units and currencies.

As always, we’d love to hear from you, so please let us know what you think about the latest update!

Mail & Calendar

Mail and Calendar are updated with a new visual style! We have added rounded corners and other adjustments to make them look and feel part of Windows 11. As before, Mail and Calendar can reflect your Windows theme so you can send emails and check your schedule using the theme you prefer. Check it out!

We look forward to releasing even more updates to the apps that come in Windows 11 for you to enjoy!

Thanks,

On the calculator the vertical space between the buttons is slightly bigger than the horizontal space. I hope they fix that.

Why are they rolling them out on the dev channel when they recommended we moved to beta?

Yeah, that's why I stayed on Dev channel. I think they recommended that because there were a lot more people in the Dev channel than any other channel and wanted to spread it out some.

I didn't see that. Do you have a link so I can read it?
I didn't get the memo, either. I just checked my Insiders page on settings, and I have no option to change away from Dev anyway. I reckon it's because my 7th gen CPU doesn't qualify - I think Beta only allows fully compliant systems, while it's Dev that allows some leeway. Switching to Beta would mean switching back to Win10 Beta, and that downgrade is not possible. So I can linger in Dev until general availability, when I'll have to reinstall Win10. (I won't really, i'm dual-booting with my main Win10 installation, and I'll just delete this one.) Unless, of course, MS decides to allow 7th gen CPU's. I'm beginning to think they will not. I don't think I want to be strung along in Insiders Dev any more, so I'll probably just be bugging out soon.

I wonder who really uses the programmable/graphical calculator features. I used to have then on my old HP calculators but once spreadsheets came along, I have not used such features in a couple of decades.

To me, this is a solution to a problem I don't have.

Just tried the new snipping tool - what an underwhelming experience. It is virtually no different to snip and sketch. Only additional but (imo) rather pointless feature is ability to crop a selected file.

What a lost opportunity here to really upgrade annotation tools. How difficult can it be to add some of paint's basic features like text, lines, circles, squares etc.

I really am saddened by the fact W11 is actually less flexible thhan W10, and all we are getting is cosmetic flim-flam. I have yet to see ONE NEW FEATURE that is a GAME CHANGER :-(

This is a late reply, but just out of curiosity:

Have you ever seen an OS upgrade after XP that provided a feature that was a "game changer" that would inspire you to upgrade from its immediate ancestor? (Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10?)

The only OS I've felt strongly about was 8 (and 8.1). Couldn't wait to get off those and go to 10, because of the poor integration of the "modern" applications. (IMHO)

(Historical note: XP was the first "desktop" OS that was built on the Windows NT code base, and had no DOS underpinnings. It was an enormous change.)

Especially after SP3 and considering the time, I believe XP was the all-time best version of Windows. Unfortunately, it seems that 11 is no greater improvement comparatively over 10 than Vista was over XP, if as much.

Late to the party - apologies. My Dell XPS 7th gen CPU is working fine on the Beta.

Vista was the Win 'dog' version in my book. Unfortunately MS failed to state the hardware requirements so it brought a new meaning to sluggish. There were ways of stripping out the dross to speed it up but really it was totally unreasonable in my book to expect folks to go to those extremes for what gain - so agree - XP ruled.

And don't get me started on 8 which was just a glorified UI designed for the Lumix phone. At the moment in my case I'm trying to see the benefits (for me) of 11 over 10. So all depends on your circumstances. Interesting times!!

The main benefit of course is continuing support after 2025

In use I find little difference between 10 and 11, except for a much better layout in the Settings app. I run both on various machines, and there are times when I have to look at the taskbar (is it centred or on the left?) to remind myself which I'm currently using. :D

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.
