this is not the full blown malwarebytes software this is just the stand-alone anti-exploit software its just 9.17MB in folder size.
it protects the .exe files from being changed/injected or exploited.

malwarebytes browser guard is a browser extension which i use on Firefox and is available for other browsers.

WD these days is more than sufficient for domestic users. You are more liable to get scammed than be attacked by a Virus these days. Pro hackers either now go for "de-stabalising" National infrastructure and services or just scrape publically available data from social media etc websites.

Another potential source is that anybody running a Credit Check on people can get the number of Credit Cards they hold and the issuing financial institution even if you can't get the actual account. (Data is supplied by a load of these Credit Reference agencies such as Experian etc -- which really have far too much power these days). From there hackers can then get actual card numbers which are often sold in lots of 1,000 in places like the bacstreets of Chennai where a lot of Offshored I.T exists.

I'd be 100% more careful about getting scammed than getting a computer infected these days.

In addition, I would say guard your email password and make sure it's a good one. If a bad actor gets into your email, he can reset many passwords on other websites. Likewise, be careful with your phone secirity since many companies use a cell phone to authenticate you.

Yesterday I mentioned how our company is investing on mandatory cybersecurity training for all employees and that our IT is randomly sending out fake emails to random employees to test their cybersecurity awareness. Well, I just received one this morning. The first thing I looked at is the sender email address that looks really PHISHY.

MS logo is also blocked. So I reported it as phishing email and true enough, it was a test. Our company's investment is paying off.

Fixed that for you. But yes, Linux is definitely getting there. It has been in the best place its ever been especially for gaming. It just has too many random problems for me to use as a daily driver. One day linux mint or ubuntu on my 2 year try it out cycle might work for me enough to be happy to finally keep it around.

Maybe one day steam OS will save me. I generally like using windows though, and just the way windows is built. It's very familiar to me.

I like malwarebytes, but I bought a lifetime subscription a long time ago for $40, so I obviously have no complaints. Works alongside defender nicely once you turn off it registering it in the security center.

Get a 2fa hardware key for email. Actually get 2 in case you lose one. No one can log in without it, unless they steal your cookie, so use a browser for email only and another browser for everything else.

Call phone company and request a password on your account. I consider SSN numbers public knowledge and useless to verify identity.

10 years ago my phone stopped working, so I called verizon and asked what's up. They said "Didn't you just buy 4 new iphones?" I said no.....? They said "We're gonna transfer you to fraud." They allowed the last 4 of my SSN to verify someone in NY to buy 4 iphones on my account. From then on my account has been password protected.

Only last month did the cable company stop putting the security code on my bills that anyone could pluck from my mailbox.

It's not your devices you have to worry about, but big companies doing really dumb things.

I'm an old stick in the mud. Any bad actor pretending to be me better know what they're doing because my phone is a land line. No cell, no smart phone, no nuthin'. It's amazing how focused I can be when I'm out in public. It's almost scary. Yup 2FA is good but it ain't enough. Never use the same password on separate accounts for anything. Even email accounts should always have different passwords. That way if one happens to get hijacked you can snag it back through validation from a separate email account. Personally I refuse to use password savers. Data bases get hacked too frequently. I keep a little black book and I have to be physically robbed of that book for them to have access to my passwords. I laugh because if they even did this they'll still have a time sorting out what on earth I wrote. They'll need to know how my brain works lol :zany:

If a password manager's database is hacked it still wont give away any passwords because they are salted and hashed. The companies are getting better at encrpting more account details so emai addresses etc are now secured.
Even so, all my banking login details are stored in the Mark I noggin!

I still don't trust them. So many say they encrypt and then something doesn't go right. I'm happy with my little black book. That way, when I keel the wife can rob my bank and head off to the Bahamas or wherever. She knows how my brain works.

So never let anyone check their email on your device! I still haven't figured out how to get my stuff off her phone. I delete it and it keeps coming back.

I'm assuming she got them that way. Unless there's another way lol. But yeah you could steal someone's favs and passwords by asking to use someone's device to check your email. Google will happily sync them right up for you.

That article reads more like what some politicians decided for Kaspersky. Fortunately this didn't happen in Canada. I'm pretty sure other VS programs have the same 'back door' access to their software.

I had the same thing happen to me with my AT&T account. If I'm not mistaken it was around the same time. as you. I found out when I tried to call my wife. I kept getting a message that her number was no longer in service. I guess N.Y. is/was an easy place to illegally buy cell phones. Now to access my account or update my phones I have to use a security code.

I typically update my Email Password every 6 months for all accounts

Do use Roboform Password Manager (renewed tl 2026) with a Master Password only i know in my mind

Do keep Windows security Defender up to date, and Malwarebytes Premium on all PC systems

Don't open just any link anymore

Don't visit all kinds of links anymore these days

Do backup every PC system weekly

Secured Comcast Xfinity XB8 Gateway tightly as much as i could

Do make sure every household PC is updated promptly everytime an update is released

**Back in 2005 i was really reckless in terms of my PC security, not anymore though. 2005 i followed links from so called friends in a PC Game, listened to his suggestion to open the files to see if My Test of WIndows Live OneCare would block the Infected files, instead severely infected my AMD Athlon XP 2500 system so bad shop had to rebuild it totally with replacement downgraded parts just to have a working system, Never making a mistake like that again**
