Hi,

I performed a full partition and drive back and restore.

1. While partition backup stored on D. Size of W11 and MS Off and apps 43.3 GB and image size 23.3. Took 2 mins to create and approx. 3 to restore.

2. Did a full back included D: Data empty too, on an external usb spindle HDD. Took approx. near 3 mins and same to restore.

3. I felt that the restored image wasn't that stable initially. Did I create and restore too quickly an after the other?

4. MR automatically while restoring removed the encryption/bitlocker and got it back when was completed.

5. Unchecked 4 for the 1st one, Windows only, and all checked for the full drive external backup. Should I have unchecked both 4 and 5 for the active C Windows 11 partition?

Any expert suggestions, advice.

Thanks.MR5.png

You can purge the log files if you want,

Screenshot_11.png

And remove existing backups either delete or edit and delete. Not sure if this will affect diff. or incrimental backups though as I don't use the features!!

I always image the whole drive as is. If I need to work on any partitions I use Minitool partition manager. That last partition is a recovery partition which Windows uses if you need to try repairs etc. I alway leave that partiton but that's up to you.

The only two partitions you need as an absolute minimum to back up windows is partition 1 and partition 3. I have a fairly similar setup and I select all but the D drive used for data which I backup a different way. This makes the windows backups lean and mean.

If you backup all but D partition in one image file, you can backup D drive in a different one if you like. It really comes to personal preference.

I don't know what it will leave, ie an unallocated space or an extended C drive if you leave out the D partition. As I said I always work on partitions using a partition manager and use Macrium simply to image as is.

@cereberus , what puzzles me is that if you image the drive without the D partition then when you restore there won't be a D partition? Are we talking about different things here? Backup or imaging?

@cereberus , what puzzles me is that if you image the drive without the D partition then when you restore there won't be a D partition? Are we talking about different things here? Backup or imaging?
If you backup say all but D drive, the image file still reserves space for D drive i.e. all partitions are still aligned at same start and end boundaries.

Then when you restore image as is (not adjusting partitions), it restores each partition in correct place and does not overwrite the D partition i.e. the D drive is not affected.

However, if you use drag and drop to reorder/resize partitions, then you will then overwrite the D drive as partition boundaries have changed.

@cereberus , checking #1,3 is fine for image creation and restoration?

Thanks.
