142857 is a really magic number.

Multiply it by 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and see the pattern.

Clue: 1st number in each multiplication is 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8 which are the digits in 142857.

Same applies to 2nd to 6th digits, albeit not in same order.

But can you see the other strange pattern?

142857 * 3 = 428571
142857 * 4 = 571428
142857 * 5 = 714285
142857 * 6 = 857142

The only thing I can see is if you 'read' the results starting from the same digit they're all in the same order? So start the first answer with one, then second answer also start it with one etc.
Most probably I'm way out but can't see anything else.

That's it - numbers rotate.

In fact, if you think about it, you can work out answer if somebody says multiply number by 4 without actually doing any sums.

142857 x 4

4th highest number in digits 142857 (low to high) equals 5

Thus knowing rotation characteristic, answer must be 571428.

Works for any multiple up to 6.

When I worked in brake industry in one factory on my initiative on advertisements and all packages we put slogan: "A car doesn't have to drive but has to stop one way or other". Some times we would ad: "Better with our brakes than by a tree".
