Windows 11, 23H2 (22632.3235), ASUS GL703GS laptop, i7-8750H, 32GB RAM, GTX 1070 8GB, NVMe + SSD

Today I noticed the service named Genesys Logic Service (C:\WINDOWS\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\genestor.inf_amd64_312a8313e431fea0\GLCRIconSvc.exe) crashes silently (found the crashes under Reliability Monitor) every time I insert a USB pendrive or MicroSD card and the service is running.
The funny thing is these drives work perfectly fine except for the silent crash of GLCRIconSvc.exe:

I didn't even know what Genesys Logic software was and that it was installed on this 2018-2019 ASUS laptop, so it was only today that I learned about this software and the role it plays in the ability to read USB cards...
There are also some drivers installed (and these at least seem to be required to make card reader work):

1710277835760.png
... but the strange thing I experienced is that, with the service stopped, if I extract and reinsert the pendrive or MicroSD they still work perfectly fine!

👉🏻 So my question in the end is: is this service launching 'GLCRIconSvc.exe' still required under Windows 11?
From my tests it seems totally redundant and only drivers are needed, so my guess is that it may have been needed on old Win10 to start it up (the service startup was: "Automatic") and make the card reader hardware work as intended. Does anyone know better than I do about this Genesys Logic service and know if I can safely remove it under W11 23H2, since it just seems to crash with each pendrive/MicroSD insertion (if running) and doesn't seem to have any practical use today?

I have no "Memory technology devices", it just appears under USB devices (must be connected to internal USB hub):

Do you see that service in Services.msc GLCRIconSvcr ?

Does it exist as uninstallable program in Programs & Features?

Yes of course as I said there's a service launched Automatically at boot (now set to Manual by me):

1710288559707.png

If it's running though, it just crashes once I insert a USB pendrive, or a memory card MicroSD in the specific slot on this laptop. Everything still works after the GLCRIconSvc.exe crashes anyway... that's why I wonder what's this for under Windows 11? Service itself seems redundant and not working (anymore?).

Is this the support page from Asus for your notebook?

I also found a driver from MS Catalog but, there's a whole bunch of them.
Don't know which one you should choose. try to match it to the one already there
and update it.

Yeah thanks, I already searched from MS Update Catalog and ASUS Support page (originally was 4.5.3.2 installed, I manually upgraded to latest 4.5.7.0 today)...
BTW, MS Update Catalog .CABs contain just the drivers, no trace of "GLCRIconSvc.exe" service file.

Found this from File.net . Also, lots of errors associated with this file on the net.
I am surprised that Asus would use this . I have a Asus G73JH from 2010 and it
has Realtek reader.

What happens if you Stop it from starting in Device Manager.
Can you locate the program and reinstall it?

Already prevented it from starting since I've changed it to Manual service (was Automatic), so it won't start at boot anymore.
Everything runs perfectly fine after a reboot and this service EXE never launched. That's why of the whole thread... 😉 The drivers only seem enough.
I see no use for it except causing a useless task crash every time is running and I insert a pendrive/MicroSD (after first crash I won't see it crashing anymore of course, unless I forcibly restart the service). That service task stays running in bg... just to crash when triggered 😁

I downloaded the zip from Asus for this and this is what's in there.
The .exe is there as well:

Maybe keep a copy on hand in case you need to reinstall it.

Yes, thanks. Already backed up the whole ASUS site (I mean the files for my PC) some time ago just to be sure they won't remove drivers one day.
If you browse into CABs from MS Update Catalog or from other sources (e.g. drivers from Station Driver site...) they have no GLCRIconSvc.exe

If you browse into CABs from MS Update Catalog or from other sources (e.g. drivers from Station Driver site...) they have no GLCRIconSvc.exe
That's probably because the program itself (.exe) is under license from Genesys to Asus.
So, as long as you can still use the card reader and USB drives then, you should be good to go Right?
Asus notebooks lasts a long time if taken care of but, don't try and fiddle around on the insides.
Mine take allot of work to change whatever is needing. Just a heads up.

Yep, everything runs perfectly fine even without that useless service started at boot and running in bg... have no idea what's for, all I've found is it crashes for some reason on Win11 when I use pendrives/MicroSD. No problem whatsoever without the service... and pendrives/MicroSD still work fine with just the driver installed from .INF (GeneStor.sys)
