In my version of Edge new tabs don't display any search bars. The OP is using Edge and I'm talking about the search bar that appears mid-screen when a new Edge start/new tab page is opened. It's hardcoded to Bing.
They have empty pages, just like I have it in Firefox.
None of all the disturbing advertisement, news and what all appears on the default new tab.
How I did that? By the extension 'Custom New Tab'
So I did not even notice the other search bar in the mid-screen, so that's why I posted a wrong answer, for which I apologize...
Putting the search word(s) into the adress bar is using the specified default search-engine.
That's how it is specified in the settings: Search engine used in the address bar
So no wonder it is not functioning in the search bar mid-screen!
