Google Searches

The OP is using Edge and I'm talking about the search bar that appears mid-screen when a new Edge start/new tab page is opened. It's hardcoded to Bing.
In my version of Edge new tabs don't display any search bars.
They have empty pages, just like I have it in Firefox.
None of all the disturbing advertisement, news and what all appears on the default new tab.

How I did that? By the extension 'Custom New Tab'

So I did not even notice the other search bar in the mid-screen, so that's why I posted a wrong answer, for which I apologize...

Putting the search word(s) into the adress bar is using the specified default search-engine.
That's how it is specified in the settings: Search engine used in the address bar
So no wonder it is not functioning in the search bar mid-screen!

I'm in the UK and use Edge all the time, Google or Bing search, sainsbury's is at the top of both the search lists.

Edge Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Search and connected experiences > only first 2 options enabled.
Only extension in Edge is Google Docs Offline.

"Works fine in Private window, but search results are with Bing, even though Google is default."

That indicates some sort of unwanted cookies and temporary files present in Edge.

So some settings need attending to:

Bearing in mind the notes for these options:
3 dots > Settings > Delete browsing data > Browsing history > all time > Clear now.
3 dots > Settings > Delete browsing data > Cookies and other site data > all time > Clear now.

3 dots > Settings > Privacy, search. and services >

All 7 categories need looking at in detail.
