OS
Windows 10 Pro
How practical is the scenario below?
  1. Control the old Windows 10 (Pro) computer with the new Windows 11 computer via Remote Desktop.
  2. Initially, the old Windows 10 computer does all the heavy lifting, the new Windows 11 computer is merely a front-end
  3. As time goes by, apps & data will gradually migrate from the old Windows 10 computer to the new Windows 11 computer
  4. Eventually, all apps & data will reside in the new Windows 11 computer ...
... and the old Windows 10 computer is retired.

This can't be a new idea, somebody must have tried it out before, and found the pros and cons.

I cannot see any point of doing this.

I do not see how remoting to old pc helps apps to migrate.

Why not just clone image of old pc to new PC, and simply do an in-place upgrade (although I call it downgrading LOL).

How about an old app(s) that works well since XP/7/8.1/10 and with every OS upgrade you pray that it will still work, because you don't want to pay monthly subscription $?

Edit: Well, frankly, also human laziness, just wanting to keep familiar things around forever :scream:

If it was me, I'd keep the two PCs as separate entities. I'd go to the Windows 10 machine whenever I had old software that wouldn't run on 11.

So far, all software I have that ran under 10 is good under 11 as well. (I may have fewer applications installed than some people.) Fortunately, I have no software that requires a 32 bit OS.

I haven't run into any issues with older software installed on 11. My MS Office 2007 runs just fine under 11 and I consider that old.

In my experience any app that runs in W10 will run the same in W11 - and I have some very old apps, some more than 20 years old

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

That's what I did with my two desktops. I have programs on my old desktop that I can't move. Most of them are free versions of paid software. They were downloaded from those software giveaway sites.

Would a KVM swich or Remote Desktop (if possible) not be more convenient with only 1 monitor, 1 keyboard, 1 mouse?

I could have tried using a KVM switch, Remote Desktop or a VM but I have no need to do it that way. I used a spare monitor, keyboard and mouse so that wasn't a problem. I also had enough space so that also wasn't a problem. I just boot with whatever desktop I need.
