In Settings : System > Display > Graphics i can choose whether an app uses graphics in power saving or high performance mode. Does this only apply to laptops (for the battery i guess) or systems that have both integrated and discrete GPUs?

I have a desktop system that only has the integrated GPU and was wondering if changing the value from power saving to high performance on some apps will make any difference.

Windows suggests on all apps the power saving mode. I thought about changing the mode to high performance on apps like Chrome (watching YouTube videos) and VLC (watching HD movies). Chrome i had to add manually and VLC has a "Not Recommended" note after changing to High Performance. I wonder if that applies to the high battery use which obviously doesn't apply in my case.

In Windows 11 it has Power Saving Vs Higher Performance.

So i guess in the case of a Desktop with one GPU, whatever option is enabled wont make a difference.

Even an integrated GPU can have a low power / Power saving mode it depends on the actual GPU - this can be just a reduction of the Colour Gamut used or the actual GPU speed used. which may effect the performance of Windows in general.

If your windows on your Desktop system is offering the option to switch power usage modes, I would test the options available to you. It's not likely to have any serious bad results but as always I would recommend backing up at least your data.

Once you are ready run a few of your regular applications/ games ETC and gauge how they perform to your needs. Next select the power save option, and compare the results.

If you find that the performance is still usable ( or no change as the GPU does not have a true low power mode), you can switch permanently, ( it's better for the money you pay for electricity to stay in your pocket, not the electricity suppliers ;) )

Just a guess, that Windows will suspended an app, if not being used, to save resources in power saving mode.

I don't think you need high performance for day to day tasks, only high usage programs like games and graphic programs etc need the extra umph

I don't think so. When I run 'Everything', which is a system search program, Windows always has it in high performance mode as it's always indexing so can't suspend it.

I don't think so as you can edit the settings in power mode via control panel>power options>change plan settings>change advanced power settings. try it. sadly I cannot try it on this machine as it is an HP and does not have options I will try ot on my Alienware (my best machine) and see unless this is a changed feature in win 11

No. It's just a search engine not a browser. YouTube has it's own video quality settings and I assume so does VLC.

Actually in the Control Panel settings i have it set to Maximum Performance.

@AntonisCy I use Maximum Performance on my other machine. I hope you can then go into change advanced power settings and I believe there is an option there for video

It's a fast alternative to Windows search and thanks to @f14tomcat for pointing out this handy App.
As an example searching for Edge.exe brings this up and you can right click to open or copy the path. Takes seconds.
