The new .docx and .xlsx files on average are noticeably smaller than corresponding .doc and .xls files. Over time you will save some disk space.

In any case that not the only reason I stopped using Office 2003. When Microsoft launched Vista in January 2007 I went to a launch event for it. All attendees received a free key for Office 2007 Pro. To use it I downloaded the demo version of Office 2007 Pro. I used the key to unlock it.

After I got used to using the new ribbon interface I never wanted to use the old archaic menu interface on Windows 2003. Now I find it confusing to try use a office program with a menu. The same goes for LibreOffice and FreeOffice. If install either one of them I can choose to use either the menu or ribbon interface. I always choose to use the ribbon interface.

Currently, I have keys for Office 2007, 2010, 2019, and 2021. I have more keys than I have computers to use all of them with. I still have the keys for Office 2003 Pro, Office 2003 Student and Teacher. That gives me a total of 5 computes to install them on. I don't have Office 2003 installed on any of my computers anymore.

BTW, After I first installed Office 2007 I still had some computers with Office 2003. I installed the compatibility pack in Office 2003 so that I could read/write the .docx and .xlsx files.

In 2011 I took a class using Office 2010. I installed Office 2010 Pro. I just happened to already have a Office 2003 Pro installed. I was perplexed when the Word 2010 options it said to use in the textbook were not available. I finally realized that Word 2010 was using the default Normal.dot from Word 2003. After I deleted it Word 2010 created a new default profile Normal.dotm. Word 2010 worked OK after that.
