Hello Bruce, welcome to Eleven Forum.

The Toshiba Satellite C55-A5172 is not "compatible" with Windows 11, but you can still run Windows 11 on it.



These are probably the cheapest, quality... replacements for your hard drive, in the 1TB range.
At present, it seems you have a 750GB, 5400rpm, 2.5 inch hard drive.
I assume you're in the UK... ??
When I googled Toshiba Satellite C55-A5172 hard drive replacement...everything came up UK.



About 5x as fast as your current drive...


Or if you want to stick with a hard drive...
About 2x as fast as your current drive...



I would definitely choose the SSD (Solid State Drive).

If you are in the uk , that link is expensive. 1tb mx500 is usually around £65-70.

Yes, but it is an unsupported device for Windows 11. You would need to use one of the known workarounds to install it....

Your Toshiba requires a 2.5" SATA hard drive. This can be an HDD or an SSD, an HDD will cheaper but an SSD would be much faster. Instructions to replace your hard drive are here:

I agree with the others but do note that your choice of disk size is not a limiting factor for installing Windows 11.
You are free to choose the size of disk that your usage requires within any limit laid down in your computer specs [some have disk limitations, some don't].

I am in the US, Connecticut exactly. My Toshiba Satellite blew it's hard drive and it originally ran Windows 8.1, got the free upgrade to Windows 10 and ran until the HDD went. I was hoping I could resurrect it with a new hard drive and newer operating system. I guess Windows 10 is ok too. Just need to find one with a reasonable price. Just wondering if it's worth spending the $$$$ on it.

At the top right, at those PCPartpicker links, you can change the country.
PCPartpicker automatically finds the lowest prices from e-tailers in a given country.

On the left, in the navigation pane, choose the following...

For SSD choose: SSD, 2.5", SATA 6Gb/s
For HDD choose: 7200rpm, 2.5", SATA 6Gb/s

If you're in a hurry, also choose: Capacity... 1000 GB



The ones I picked are what I consider are the lowest you should stoop, in the manufacturer dept.

For performance there's little to choose between 10 or 11. My old Toshiba Satellite dual boots both, and feels about the same running either. Windows 10 remains fully supported until 14th October 2025.

The fact that you were already running Windows 10 on that system bodes well. In general, if your system was capable of running Windows 10, it is almost certain that Windows 11 will run on it. I say almost because there are some very rare exceptions, but I would think it highly likely that you will be okay, although in a technically unsupported configuration as has already been noted several times in this thread.

I haven't yet found any machine that Windows 11 won't run on, including my least appropriate one!

@BruceK , do you have a local Walmart? The one in my area has SSDs on the shelf. The last time I looked they had 500GB and 1TB SSDs. You can also check Amazon.

That has also been my experience. The only reason that I used the term "it is almost certain" in my earlier posting is that there are even some technically fully supported systems on which Microsoft has blocking holds on for 22H2 at the moment so you never know if you may run into something odd, but it is unlikely.
