I did this in Windows 10 now I can't remember how. Maybe I used software, I don't know.

Could someone please explain to me (like you're talking to a village idiot) how to hide a drive from view in Windows Explorer (Win11)
I still need access to it which I used to be able to do typing Z: into the path at the top. My partner keeps accessing the drive thinking they're on the C drive. (Because we all know "Z" looks like the letter "C" :cautious: )

The external is a backup drive (RealTimeSync) that I have the driver letter "Z:" assigned to. I tried following a fix using Group Policy Objects to hide specified drives, but I couldn't follow it due to some of the instructions not being available. Possibly differences in win 10/11 MMA? (Or because of the village idiot factor)

Got it.

1 Open registry editor (I always run as admin)
2 Select Yes when the User Account Control (UAC) prompt appears.
3 Use the left pane to navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Policies > Explorer.
4 Right-click on the Explorer key and go to New and select DWORD (32-bit) Value from the sub-menu.
5 Rename the DWORD to NoDrives.
6 Double-click the NoDrives DWORD.
7 In the Edit DWORD (32-bit) Value dialog box, enter the drive value from the table below.

Now the desired drive letter can't be seen in explorer but can be accessed if I type the desired drive letter into the navigation bar at the top of explorer.
I'm sure Shawn has a tutorial somewhere but I couldn't find it.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.
