I'm having an issue that has been traced to the KB5034204 Windows optional update. I'd like to try and roll this back, but I'm not seeing it listed in the Update History of Windows Update itself.

Are there certain updates Microsoft hides from the list, to prevent uninstalling them? Or are they timed where you can't access them after a certain time?

Or does this simply mean I didn't receive this update during my last batch of updates? I've been doing regular Windows updates for the last month, so I assume it would've been pushed down to me.

The update that you have indicated is a Preview Cumulative Update from January 23 of this year. Since this is a cumulative update, it is replaced by newer cumulative updates. There have been at least 12 newer cumulative updates since then (the monthly updates as well as the preview updates) so that KB should have been long ago been superseded by newer updates.

Could you possibly provide some details on what the issue is that you are encountering so that we might be able to make alternative suggestions for resolving the issue?

KB5034204 is the January 2024 Monthly Preview Update. If your Windows Update has been working, it would have been replaced by the July 2024 Monthly Update (KB5040442).

Each Monthly Update is cumulative, meaning each month's new KB update replaces every version that existed before it. Every month, a new KB replaces the last one. Don't go by the KB number, but look at the release date.

What worked for me...

For anyone having a Windows Explorer memory related to KB5034204, I tracked it down to disabling the GameInputService in Windows Services settings. Stopped the process, disabled it and it stopped the error permanently. Been several days now, no error anymore.
