How do I change the descriptor for my ethernet adapter?

This may seem like a minor issue, but it has caused me some confusion.

I am using an ethernet connection to access the internet on my desktop Win 11 PC. When I hover my cursor over the network icon in the system tray (lower right corner of my screen), it pops up this information:

MyWIFI-5G
internet access

This is obviously wrong since I am using an ethernet connection, so I'd like to change the description from MyWIFI-5G to something like MyEthernet.

The problem is that when I go to "Network and Sharing Center/Change adapter settings", the description of my ethernet connection is:

Ethernet
MyWIFI-5G
Intel(R) Ethernet Connection...

When I click on "Rename this connection" I am only given the opportunity to change the top descriptor, i.e., "Ethernet," which is correct. What I want to do is change the second line, "MyWIFI5-G," but I cannot find a way to accomplish this. Is there any way?

It can be done as I did mine ages ago, I just can't remember how now. If I find it I'll post it though.

If you're trying to change the term: "internet access" ...I don't think you can.
That term (indicator), just tells you one of two things... you have "internet access" or you have "no internet access".




I gave you ten points for filling out your computer specs.
But you really should list the drives you have, as well.

Thanks for this cool information. My ethernet ProfileName name reporting is DeepSouth 2. My Router is showing the SSID as just DeepSouth. So I'd like to change the name to just DeepSouth. The thing is in Regedit there are also entries for a DeepSouth 3 and there is already a ProfileName DeepSouth. Should it be safe to delete the profiles for the unused names? Or maybe just rename them to shuffle around to get what I want.

I wonder if changing routers over the years on this PC has caused so many profiles in the Registery?

@starchase Yes, you can manipulate profiles in the registry. Sordum makes a tool to make it easier.

When I had this problem,
- I turned off my router, then
- deleted all my equivalents of your DeepSouth entries [DeepSouth, DeepSouth 2] in that Registry Key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Profiles
- then turned the router back on to reconnect to the network and the profile was shown without that 2 tagged onto it.
