I always thought unless one did a clean install of drivers, it never replaces and even if it overwrites, it would still be in driver store so one can uninstall and go back to the earlier version which is basically with every other driver. I think if Windows Device Manager showed the Events tab when displaying the driver when using the oem251.inf listing, one would atleast be able to see what the previous events were to atleast know when it was supposedly last used atleast to give some clues.

Yes I am and it could be they pushed it by accident since I was trying to update to the latest Beta and this thing is in Windows update already downloaded and my only option where the Check Updates button is, is to install... I am going to try Windows Automatic Updates Manager since it will allow me to actually delete the older version of the Intel graphics driver and only have the version I install there instead of forcing me to put the new version on top of the old version which did cause a problem a few years ago when I upgraded directly over.

I am one of those that never do backups because back in the 1990s, everytime I did a backup, something always bad happens to the HDD which requires a warranty replacement from the drive manufacturer and the backup also failed so I gave up doing it. Same reason I don't do webpages either as it will always be a lost cause. When I don't do backups, nothing fails. I'll be starting doing backups soon though.

This is going to read a little confusing because I just woke up and covid has/is causing problems 2 weeks later. I am really quite unwell.

It’s something I haven’t had time to check. The schedule documentation is vague or I am not quite following:

The only safe mode if you want to prevent any update, until you select otherwise, is “Normal” which as it says, checks but takes no action.

What if?
If I select “Normal” and select Automatically update Windows using the settings above and the schedule below
And then, if I was to select “Also update Windows Defender daily using the UI mode above”

Does that mean it only checks for updates but actually ignores the Normal mode for Windows Defender and downloads the updates for it, or does it check for Windows Defender but because Normal mode is selected, does not download defender updates?

I need to test, I haven’t had time to make backups and try. But it’s a good question mate, it’s been one that is foremost on my list to do

I suppose logic would dictate, that if it is “using the UI mode above” and the UI mode is Normal. Then no, it wont auto install Defender updates.

But as I have learned, don’t assume to understand what will work and what wont until I have been able to test it.

@antspants - Thanks for taking the time to put things in detail even though you aren't feeling well. I guess Normal with the also update can be a catch 22 situation as there could be times where there can be a bad update with the Windows Defender engine so it's better to have to approve the install in that case but in other times, sometimes there might be some bad thing that is out and you want it to be in the database to protect the system. Isn't the Automatic reboot if needed a bad idea since wouldn't that imply the system will reboot on you when you are using the system or you have the system doing something important? In any case, hope you have a speedy recovery m8!

Once again I think there could probably be some clearer documentation provided by WAU Manager.
Windows updates also have an auto reboot but only does so if there is an idle time or during a set specified time period that can be configured by the user (As far as I remember)
So I am wondering if WAU Manager follows this rule or if it in fact uses the Windows rules or just as you say, auto reboots immediately, which I would agree wouldn’t be ideal.

I’m not actually sure if I have ever read of a bad Defender update. But to be honest I’d not of noticed if there was ever one reported as I use a 3rd party firewall.

I remember the days when a router (or modem) and hardware firewall was all that one needed. I think I still have one in a box somewhere.

I’ve had security updates in WAU Manager and WAU Manager hasn’t gone against my settings and installed these.

That post on 10 Forums is 4 years old.
