Media Player frequently declines to play video files from my collection saying it needs me to install "HEVC Video Extensions", which it offers to sell me.

Is there any way to get and install this codec for free, confident that it is clean copy, rather than finding it to be compromised with malware? If so, please tell me how.

I'm a computer enthusiast so have quite a few systems that I run. More like an advanced hobby.
I second using VLC, since it will play 99.9 % of all audio and video formats without me having to add stuff. I believe in the KISS principal.

I've been using PotPlayer for years. It is a free player from a Korean (south) company that will ask to update before updating and plays
All extensions either music (Flac included) or video even the new AV1 10bit. Check it out:

Up until about 5 years ago that page allowed you to install for free. I think it was originally intended only for OEMs to use, to provide it with their new PCs.

I installed it before MS closed that loophole, and it still installs and updates on all my machines, even new ones that have just had a clean install.

@RhinoCan, I was looking through some of my old posts on Ten Forums to check the exact dates, and came across a post suggesting this free alternative.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

Save the .appxbundle file. Your browser may want to block it, but the download link points back to the MS servers.

Open the file in Explorer, and DesktopAppInstaller will automatically install it for you.

I third using VLC :-) I did once install the media codes when asked, and it didn't work - and my laptop played up a lot and had to be reinstalled. Since then I just stick to using VLC!

There's two versions of the official Windows HEVC package: the "free" one bundled by your OEM (who paid the $1 to the licensing consortium), or the one where MS asks you to pay $1 (because they don't want to pay the consortium).

The OEM version still exists on the Store's back-end, but is removed from public download. That's why you use store.rg-adguard.

Free version is usually one version behind the paid one, I guess that is on purpose.
