Hi, Just by using disk management in action tab, I created a vhd of a small size of 3 gb locating the same to my desktop.
I want to use a single application in the vhd and so I created a small vhd.
But this is not shown in the explorer.
I know that this has been created with the green progressive bar finishing at 100 percent.
If I want to use the application, I want to this drive to show, so that I could use that.
Where it is hidden? How do I make it show in explorer to select as vhd to install required applilcation
Quick answer would make me use that vhd , rather than using some other vendors programmes.

Right click on vhd, mount as a drive,

Go to disk management and initialise drive (choose mbr).

Hi, Cere, I have created a 5gb vhd on my pc. Should it be mounted before any application is to be installed and run.
Why should I choose mbr. Please say.
Could not I just install without mounting?
OK , will try and report. But please say

Is that just enough if we create just using disk management action menu.
What is the procedure , if I want to run a older application in windows to run.
The virtual drive created does not show up in explorer, if I use action menu of disk management.
should I mount that as a drive in the device manager , where Drives list the created vhd .
Should I mount the vhd from there to show in the explorer
this is somewhat confusing.. please clarify

I do not understand what you are trying to do. Installing an app in a vhd is no different to installing it on a separate physical disk.

What benefit do you think you will get?

Also, you need to initialise a vhd like any physical disk.

I want to run a old version of an app, which do not run in 64 bit.
If i create a vhd , then I could just install it and use it.
That is the idea.
When I attach a vhd it creates vhd , but on closing up and rebooting it vanishes.
Then , it is of no use, I think. I want a permanent vhd , and i want to access that app from the vhd and make use of it

That will not work. VHD does not care about OS bit type.

I think you are confusing virtual machines with virtual hard drives.

Anyway 32 bit apps run in 64 bit Windows. However very old 16 bit apps will not run in Windows 10 onwards.

What is the app you want ro run?

As cereberus says, a 16 bit app cannot run in 64 bit Windows. If it's a Windows app you'll need to run it in 32 bit Windows, which means it will have to be Windows 10 as Windows 11 is 64 bit only. That could be a virtual machine, or if you have a spare machine you could install 32 bit Windows 10 on that. For a 16 bit DOS app you could run it in DosBox on a 64 bit machine.

When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. Hi, cere,
your quote:Anyway 32 bit apps run in 64 bit Windows.
This is not happening. I want to use a excel workbook in ms office, which contains macro. This flawlessly works in 32 bit of excel application. But prompts compiler error when I use system 11, which only comes in 64 bit.
I thought of mounting my old office in virtual hard drive partition and use that file which does not work in 64 bit.
Hence I ask the query regarding the vhd.
One more problem is when i create a vhd using windows action menu in comp.mgmt., the same disappears after reboot.
I want to run the app in my 64 bit windows as a permanent mounted vhd so that i could use the old office in the vhd.
The excel version is old 2003 format xls file

You really do not get it - Windows 11 is 64bit and will run 32bit programs.

Your issue is an Office related issue. Also a vhd is no different to a normal drive - it does not know anything about bit types. What you are trying to do is basically impossible.

The easiest way to do what you want is to create a virtual machine in Hyper-V (or virtualbox, vmware etc) and install a 32bit version of Windows 10. Then install what ever version of office you want.

?????

You can run 32 bit versions of Ms Office on W11. People are still running Office 2007 and 32 bit versions of office 2010 on W11. Not sure what the problem is -- but as others have pointed out you can always run old / deprecated / legacy software (and often hardware too) on VM's which these days on any even quite modest machine (by today's standards) can be very efficient and consume minimal resources.

Hi, Jimbo and cere, the problem is the vba incompatibility , I suppose. The vba code used in earlier version differs in vba latest version, there by producing alerts like compile error. If i close the error, then all cells are with value name errors.
Can I keep the VM virtual machine drive permanent and run the programs. I noticed a strange behavior, that once I reboot, i did not find my vhd.
Can I use ntllite like software to mount . I used that and if you have not select forget, the mounted drives stay in the same place with files.

VHDs do not automount. You can create a batch file to mount drive and run batch file automatically ob startup via Task Scheduler but that is irrelevant to your problem.

Use a virtual machine - it will be permanent.

Many guides on web how to install Windows in a virtual machine. If you have Pro, you can use Hyper-V and great tutorials in www.tenforums.com tutorial section. You need to create a gen 1 vm to install 32bit Windows 10.

I have downloaded the virtual box. the problem is , I want to run older version, office in that.
When I just clicked the iso image, i get side by side incorrect config error.
When I go in to Virtual Box, I could not see, how could I select ms office, as It only list how do I could use windows .
just give hints to how do I mount office older version in VM, so that i could permanently use that in windows 11

Hi, also please see these lines
However, Oracle VirtualBox does not currently support these features, causing Microsoft's new policy change to effectively make it so you cannot use Windows 11 on VirtualBox.
Link: Windows 11 is no longer compatible with Oracle VirtualBox VMs
You really fail to understand. That article is talking about running Windows 11 inside virtualbox. You need to run 32bit Windows 10 inside virtualbox.

Hi folks
You might be able to create a W11 VM which uses the various "get arounds" on these Forums to bypass the hardware check.

Another probably easier solution us to load the Free version of VMWare player as it also in the Virtual machine config has the ability to use "Emulated TPM" in the virtual hardware (and sec boot too if you want it). If you have W11 Pro then run your VM in HYPER-V .

I'm not being "Nasty" or "Funny" here -- but I think you need a bit of "Bak 2 Skule" on what VM's are. VM's install the OS just as you would install an OS on a real (physical) PC from the install medium.

If you need to install OFFICE --it's an APPLICATION not an OS so you would need to install that from its install files FROM WITHIN the running VM (called the GUEST OS).

You can do that either by attaching any install iso image to the VM or downloading the appropriate installer.

If you have your old system available with all the programs installed the easiest way is to "clone" it to a VM but you really need to do a bit of reading up on VM's first as I think you've got totally confused here.

Cheers

Hi, Thanks. I already says in my thread that I want to install office.
I have downloaded and tried to install office using the way in the link
But I do not have any cd dvd drive as shown in the figures in the link.
I have ms office iso, but i do not know, how to go about in Storage Section to install the same.
How do I see the virtual box created, so that Icould run the install, setup inside the vm virtual box.
Here I find it difficult to proceed. Pl share your idea.
