I find it unbelievable the land mines you have to sidestep to not accept using MS services.
Gettin to be a dictatorship!

They ought to update the EULA to include: "If you don't use OneDrive, you can't use Windows"

Hi, I think microsoft is doing serious data theft by forcing their users to use their cloud services and thousands of other services that a normal user cannot aware of it at all. It shouldn't be difficult to NOT select a such 'optional' service. Jeez..

Yes you can avoid your personal folders being in Onedrive if you use a local account. Not only can you avoid Onedrive by using a local account, but you can also avoid your drives being automatically encrypted as is the norm now with modern standby devices using Windows Home.

Here's what to do during OOBE setup to create a local account.
1. Make sure you are not connected to a network.
2. When you see the Let's connect you to a network screen , press Shift + F10. This launches a command prompt.
Now run the following command at the command prompt:
oobe\BypassNRO
(
If that does not work for you, try typing MSOOBE\BYPASSNRO
3. The system will restart. Select your region and keyboard layout once again. But this time, on the Let's connect you to a network screen, you will see a new "I don't have internet" option." Select it.
4. click the "Continue with limited setup" option.
5. Create a local user account & password and answer security questions..
Tons of thanks to you.

I have disabled OneDrive because the constant stream of uploads affects my downloads and browsing. I only have 13Mbps down and 1Mbps up.

Though I wish we both had access to better internet, I'm glad to see someone in the same boat as me. Internet speed has been my argument all along against Onedrive enforcement . Neither MS nor the Onedrive proponents here seem to consider we're not all in the same boat when it comes to having access to fast internet.

For those with very limited bandwidth, I totally understand how this makes a service like OneDrive practically unusable. If you did want to continue using it for whatever reason, you can go into Settings on OneDrive and under Advanced Settings you can set bandwidth limits for uploads and downloads. This could help it to not use up all of your upload, thus negatively impacting your downloads.

For those wanting to still install Windows without using a Microsoft account and instead using a local account, you can also just do the following which is very easy to remember.

When asked for your username and password, entering nobody@nobody.com with a string of random characters for the password. It will say, oops something went wrong and then allow you to setup your local user.

Have you considered mifi? If you get better speeds on your phone you could use it to create a wifi hotspot or you could buy a dedicated router that uses a cell phone signal.

And me, pal.
20231013 154248 Direct to phone hotspot - posted.png

And that's my fast connection [directly through my phone's WiFi hotspot]. If I go through my home network to it then it's about half the speed.
I started using my phone as my internet connection a couple of decades ago and haven't found a sufficiently enticing alternative. £18 a month for unlimited data; a cable connection would be double that and I'd still want to subscribe to a phone plan anyway.

All the best,
Denis

Sometimes, I do use phone as hotspot when internet is down (which seems to happen regularly), but its signal is iffy where we live too. For me, when cell works,, it works well, but my husband is on his computer a lot and he does't have internet on his phone so it's not feasible for both of us to rely on mine all the time. We tried that when a tornado hit us last year and we were without internet for over a month.

We just happen to live in an area where there aren't a lot of options for internet service. Other than what we have, our only other choice would be satellite but the caps on bandwidth usage and over limit charges just won't work for us. That, or us building a 300 ft. tower for one of the other wireless providers to get to us. As old as we are, it doesn't make much sense to invest that much money.

My cell signal is too weak to use and it's slower than my ADSL. I do use it when the ADSL is broken.
