You might see if the upgrade failure logfiles will steer you to the problem. They are in MS speak but can be helpful in providing more info.
It depends at which point the failure occurs as to which logfiles are created.
If no error message occurs, the following log files are created when an upgrade fails during installation
before the computer restarts for the second time. You have to look at these logs to get an idea of what's causing the failure.
- C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\panther\setupact.log
- C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\panther\miglog.xml
- C:\Windows\setupapi.log
- [Windows 10:] C:\Windows\Logs\MoSetup\BlueBox.log
- C:\Windows\inf\setupapi.app.log
- C:\Windows\inf\setupapi.dev.log
- C:\Windows\panther\PreGatherPnPList.log
- C:\Windows\panther\PostApplyPnPList.log
- C:\Windows\memory.dmp
The following log files are created when an upgrade fails, and then you
restore the desktop:
- C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\panther\setupact.log
- C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\panther\miglog.xml
- C:\$Windows.~BT\sources\panther\setupapi\setupapi.dev.log
- C:\$Windows.~BT\sources\panther\setupapi\setupapi.app.log
- C:\Windows\memory.dmp
The following log files are created when an upgrade fails, and t
he installation rollback is initiated:
- C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Rollback\setupact.log
- C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Rollback\setupact.err
I agree it points to a driver. Possibly the logfile with say which one. Here's MS article on how to decifer the logfiles, again in MS technical speak, but maybe it can be of help.
Log files and resolving upgrade errors
If you are unable to make any sense of the logfile, The only other thing I can suggest for you to do is use the V2 log collector instructions found in the following link to gather the necessary logs, put them all in a folder and zip the folder. Upload the zipped folder to any cloud provider and post a
shared link here. Maybe
@zbook can provide asistance.
BSOD - Posting Instructions
You are definitely not alone in your misery. There seems to be no rhyme or clear reason for why so many are having issues. 24h2 upgrade failed for me as well...multiple times. Since mine rolled back, I found my failure in C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Rollback\setupact.err. After messing with it for days, I finally made a system image, bit the bullet, and clean installed. If you end up going that route make sure you disconnect all drives except the system drive before clean installing.
This tutorial will show you step by step on how to clean install Windows 11 at boot on your PC with or without an Internet connection and setup with a local account or Microsoft account. Windows 11 has all the power and security of Windows 10 with a redesigned and refreshed look. It also comes...
