Having just upgraded from Win 10 I am in no mood to upgrade to Win 12, which seems less attractive since AI will be in the Win 12 DNA. Anyone know? Speculate?

Most processors/videcards in use do not have artificial intelligence units built in.
Therefore, it is unlikely that the use of artificial intelligence will be mandatory in Windows 12.

Consumer versions may have a lifetime of 2 years. But how long will some version of Windows 11 be the mainstream Microsoft OS?

(It's possible that the sunset of 11 hasn't been planned yet.)

@bobkn articulated the question better than I have.

My big issue with Win 11 migration was all the changes in the UI, gratuitous in my not so humble opinion. So for me, a key part of the migration was trying to get the UI to remember resemble Windows 10 as much as possible. I have no desire to revert the UI back to Win 7, btw. When the Win 11 replacement is released, I can only hope that MS "extends" the Win 11 UI, not toss it into the blender and turn the switch to high.

Indeed I totally agree. I'm staying with Win 10 as long as I can. I have Win 11 in a VM if I absolutely need it for something.

Win 12 UI will probably be just a blank window and you type requests to Copilot to do everything. No mouse, no ICONs, no windows, nada.

Or maybe just a screen with a microphone that you use to chat with CoPilot. No need for a keyboard or mouse or any of those fancy things.

Just like an iPhone. Whoops.

You're mixing up support for specific builds of Windows versus the major OS version. Windows 10 was supported for a little over 10 years. Windows 8.1 was a little over 9. Windows 8 had a shortened cycle, because they wanted everyone on 8.1, which took very little effort. Windows 7 got a little over 10. Vista over 10. Windows XP over a dozen.

Having worked in large software companies, I am 147.5591409% sure that MS has a target date for EOL of Win 11. A date which will probably slip at least 1 year.

I have to switch to Win 11 by October because at least one of my major software vendors won't release upgrades on an unsupported OS.

Good. We are all safe until then.

I'm sure that once Win 12 is announced, Microsoft will start putting the arm on us to migrate. But I like to use an OS major release for at least 5 years.
