I go out of my way not to have any required ties to the Internet. If my Internet goes out, (admittedly a pretty seldom happening), I can boot up and work with the computer normally. All my computers are typically wired to the network, but all have WiFi that I have used on occasion to tether to my phone when I had an outage or I'm "in the wild" with my laptop.

As an advanced user and Windows expert I prefer my own convenience and willing to take the risk. So I use a local Administrator account for my computers. So far nobody else uses them. Later I might block access to my data and create a standard user for my son and enable parental controls on that user.

The computers for my wife and daughter run with limited user accounts. However, they still have automated image backups for when everything goes BOOM.
