I buy a new laptop when the old one dies. Then I was using an old 2010 eMachine desktop until a few weeks ago.😊

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 15 years?
Most PC's, maintained properly, would last for ages until Windows 11 came along!!! drink1.gif

That was a question in the final 'fast money' round of the TV show 'Family Feud'. The first contestant said 2 years, the second said 1 year!
Unanswerable question - it depends on:

1) quaiity of components

2) how it is run e.g. heavy continuous use so device runs hot all the time (heat is main killer)

3) how it is maintained (dust on fans etc)

One can reasonably expect 5 years life, but some last over 10 years. Obviously risk of failure increases as pc gets older (like people).

I replace my laptop roughly every 5 years, partly due to avoiding failure risk, but more importantly, the performance of old pcs is slow compared with similar specces new devices.

The laptop I have just retired becomes my previous laptop, and the one before that is given to charity.

Well my old Ivy Bridge build is still going strong is kept clean, and is now running 22H2 build of Windows 11 and as long as I keep getting updates I shall keep it that way. If support is cut then I have a secondary drive in situ that is running Windows 10 so I shall revert to it. The problem is those rumours of Windows 12 and if they are true then I suspect that it will come with more restrictions and nasty surprises.

A rumour is only ever that until it becomes fact. Little point in speculating about something we do not know.

My current desktop PC will be 5 years old in February 2023 and runs just like it did on day one.

Its main use is photo editing and the recent crop of AI-based apps is making it groan a little so I fancy some TLC will be in order soon.

EDIT: My previous PC was about 12 years old when I decided to replace it.
