OS
Windows 11 version 21H2 (OS Build 22000.469)
I've noticed that the Run command (via <Win+R>) and "Run new task" on Task Manager don't retain a history of typed entries like they did in Win10 and several (all?) previous versions. Is there a tweak or workaround to reinstate those?

Thanks for the report. I wonder why mine don't. (They didn't show the history even before I installed 22000.258.) The drop-down arrow just pops open a little blank window.

Just checked and I don't get any history recall either from those two places.
Did you get it at previous release? May have been reset by this morning's updates.

Just checked, even the update to .258 kept the run window's command history.
The history is stored under
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RunMRU

In Folder options->Privacy both boxes are unticked (but i guess they only relate to Quick Access).

Maybe worth to mention, I am using ExplorerPatcher from the Github repository, but I am not sure it has an effect on the history.

Just checked, even the update to .258 kept the run window's command history.
The history is stored under
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RunMRU
The right hand panel is empty at that key, so the history is not being retained.
In Folder options->Privacy both boxes are unticked (but i guess they only relate to Quick Access).
Where are those "Folder options -> Privacy" settings?
As I had the same issue, I did a bit of scouting around and found a small external Win 10 tutorial which seems to also fix the issue on Win 11. They referred to it as a bug and following that action my MRU list started populating again.

It appears a very harmless change - remember what you change though in case you need to back it out.

Let me know how it goes.
"Show most used apps" is "Off," but it is greyed out so I cannot change it. Is there some parent setting that needs to be changed?

It does appear to be security related and a method to address that is discussed here. That is supposed to enable the greyed out option and then you can change it as mentioned in previous post. Again, use with caution.

Thanks, that worked!

The root of my problem was I changed all the Privacy & Security > General settings to off. I (apparently mistakenly) thought these were actions Windows sets "on" by default to report data to Microsoft.

So far, I have only switched on the "Let Windows improve Start and search results by tracking app launches" in Settings > Privacy & security > General, which then permitted me to switch on "Show recently opened items in Start, Jump Lists, and File Explorer" in Settings > Personalization > Start.

Now the MRU lists are present on Run and Task Manager. I hadn't realized until now that those two MRUs where the same.
