Win 7
Hi,

I am getting a new Dell workstation.

In OS choice I have to select one of two options.

(1) Windows 10 Pro for Workstations (6 cores, Includes Windows 11 Pro License) English

(2) Windows -11

I have never used any of them. So I am inclined to choose Win-10 to see what it is like.

My question is what does option 1 mean ? Do I get a key for Win-11 ?

I know I will get Win-10 in a single 512GB NVMe Partition.

(1) If I want to then Limit Win-10 partition to 220 GB, how would I do that so that I can have two more partitions for data in that NVME 512GB SSD with Win-10 ?

(2) If I want to try or switch to Win-11, how would I do that ?

(3) I am also getting 2nd M.2 NVME 512GB SSD. Can I install Win-11 in that SSD & then remove Win-10 SSD & place Win-11 SSD & boot & try Win-11 that way ? If so how ?

(4) Can I dual boot Win-10 & Win-11 ? If so how & how much space will be needed for both OS ?

Thank You

There is no new key needed for 11, the same key is valid for both Windows 10 and 11. Your PC will come with its Windows 10/11 key embedded in the bios.

If you choose 10, then you should shortly see the optional free upgrade to Windows 11 being offered in Windows Update.

I have never used any of them.....

Functionally there's no real difference between 10 and 11, the kernel is virtually unchanged and software compatibility should be the same in both. The most noticeable changes are a redesigned Start menu, Taskbar, and Settings app.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

unsupported machine: Legacy bios, MBR, TPM 1.2, upgraded from W10 to W11 using W10/W11 hybrid install media workaround. In-place upgrade to 22H2 using ISO and a workaround. Feature Update to 23H2 by manually installing the Enablement Package.

What @Bree said. I got a new Dell Vostro 14" Notebook in Oct. and a new Dell Vostro 5890 Desktop in April, both with Win10 Pro and free license for Win11 Pro. After setting them up and doing all the updates then I got Win11 Pro. Haven't had any issues with Windows on them and the programs I use, even some older ones that I still have on my 6-yr. old Win10 Pro.

So when you download updates, there is a separate update for Win-11 ?
And how long does it take to Update to Win-11 ?

Yes, there will be updates to Win11 after it is installed. Keep in mind that following each twice-yearly Version Upgrades such as Win10 Version 21H1 to Version 21H2 there will updates. The updates usually are for the Version installed although many updates can apply to all supported Versions. It's been announced there will be only a Yearly Version Upgrade and we are due it for Win11 most any day now, will be 22H2.

That depends on how fast your internet is, how powerful a cpu you have, and whether you use an SSD.
Allow an hour of you time, that should be more than enough for a modern system.
