How to check NVME driver for HBM capability?

Wow, that is very strange. Booting to safe mode should not do that. Have you tried restarting again?

yes...my laptop was originally set up for Optane...I took the optane board out to put the 980 in. It kind of acts weird now. For example, I did a BIOS update and it would not boot off the 980 anymore. I reinstalled the old hard drive with optane and it booted. I then re-installed the 980. It has been fine since. I did try to install the Windows NVMe driver and when it wouldn't boot , I used a system restore point to get it working again. This is unexpected. Any ideas? I might try reinstalling the old hard drive again, but that is annoying.

You shouldn't have to install the windows nvme driver, it comes with the OS. What laptop?

When you look at the SATA portion of the BIOS, what does it have? Is that where you looked for an RST option?

Wow I am sorry about this. This is really unexepected behavior. Can you get back into safe mode?

You should be able to go into the recovery environment -> troubleshooting -> Advanced -> startup options to reenable safe mode., then can explore from there.

I did not have to install the NVMe driver, biut I switched the storage controller in device manager from the RST to the NVMe driver and the system would not boot.

I don't blame you...this should not happen by just going into and out of safe mode. The laptop is HP Pavilion 15cs00064st. My bios is very stripped down I think...nothing about sata. I can't get into safe mode, I can't get past the screenshot above. Here is the screen in BIOS I was looking at earlier

That damn optane board is a proprietary thing. Not like a normal nvme drive, it is almost like two. the optane cache and the QLC nand. I wonder if that has something to do with it.

Can you get back into safe mode as per above?

I am making a windows bootable recovery USB on another PC and will try...BIOS still sees the 980. Windows is corrupted somehow.

What makes you think it is corrupted? I think now it is trying to boot normal to windows but windows now configured with windows nvme and not RST, but the BIOS has it configured as RST.

After a harrowing few hours it is fixed. Folks, bookmark THIS VIDEO in case you ever have this happen to you. I had to try this a few times until I did it right. I am frankly scared to do anything on my machine now, even go into safe mode. I will back everything up now. If someone could help me figure out why that happened and if my laptop will ever be stable I would appreciate it.

"a required device isnt connected or cant be accessed" usually indicates an incorrect bcd entry. The common fix is to run bcdboot.

Yes...if you watch that video, that was one of the steps. I really took a leap of faith and followed the procedures shown.

Now that things are stable in my system and I have done more research, here is what I know:

1) HP has disabled advanced mode in BIOS for my and many laptops. Different methods I have read to get into advanced mode have failed. Therefore, I cannot disable RST in BIOS. The BIOS must be set to AHCI mode in order for the Microsoft NVMe driver to work with the Samsung 980. So I have to stay with RST.
2) RST does support NVMe and HMB and Intel's RST Software says HMB is enabled on my machine, so that is good.
3) My 980 is only reading at about 1700 MB/s according to Magician, which is about half its capability. I set it to full performance mode and that did nothing. This could indicate that the PCIe is working at X2 instead of X4, but I read that all PCIe ports are X4 capable. Could this be a BIOS setting (which again I would not be able to change because HP locked it) or is there another reason I am only getting half speeds? My CPU is an intel Gen 8.

When I upgraded my laptop from M.2 SATA (S11-512G-PHISON-DVS-B27 with the storahci.sys base driver) to NVMe (2TB Samsung 980 PRO with the stornvme.sys base driver), I bumped into another issue that still wouldn't let me boot into Windows even after bcdboot went successful. The solution was to, as an extra step, just boot Windows in Safe Mode and reboot normally again after that. Apparently by default StorNVMe doesn't get loaded during early boot if Windows was originally installed on a SATA drive so, booting in Safe Mode (only one time) after doing the bcdboot is how that can easily be fixed much faster than having to reclone like someone has described in this post:

If we knew the exact model of the machine, somebody might know. Is it a secret? edit: Just noticed you did mention it, would be easier to find in your system specs.
