How do I get rid of this nonsense?

Randomly I either get a thumbnail or a piece of text appearing when I put my mouse over a taskbar button. It's often in the way of what I'm reading. I've tried all sorts of settings and registry changes but they will not go away. I can't even make one disappear, I have to make one appear further along the taskbar where it isn't in the way.

I really detest computers making assumptions. Until I click, take no action! My mouse has to sit somewhere! Every part of the screen does something nowadays.

I get that hover feature only with programs that are open and in focus or behind what is in focus, otherwise it's just the name of the program the icon is associated with.

I'll try it again, but I've done that before, only to find no change. Usually when I go look in there it's still set really high, but this time it's not only ignored it but reset it back to 400! It's impossible to test if it's worked, since it sometimes does it and sometimes not.

I get that hover feature only with programs that are open and in focus or behind what is in focus, otherwise it's just the name of the program the icon is associated with.

It's also doing it for minimised programs for me. The choice of text or thumbnail is totally random.

I guess the reason for it is people like you who for some reason have tiny icons without words and might forget what the program is.

And how do you know which of those are running? Your setup looks like a Mac.

Whichever is open is signified by the blue bar under the icon. And not quite like a Mac OS X as mine didn't have the Widgets at the left end of the Taskbar or the Notification Area [previously System Tray] at the right end of the Taskbar.

Thanks, I've turned that off AGAIN, since something re-enabled it.....

Dunno if any of all this will work, since last time it just reduced how often it happened. It feels like I'm fighting a fire with a watering can.

Minimized is still open.

Huh? If it wasn't open, there would be nothing to hover over.

Whichever is open is signified by the blue bar under the icon.

Not obvious enough. It's very clear on my machine what I'm running. They all have a full sized button, even including the name of the document.

I start things with.... the start menu! Which is why it's so named.

And not quite like a Mac OS X as mine didn't have the Widgets at the left end of the Taskbar or the Notification Area [previously System Tray] at the right end of the Taskbar.

Windows defaults to looking like a Mac, you've disabled those widgets. Why does MS copy the nonsense Apple creates?

Hello, :alien:

You can use the method in the tutorial below to set a high value for the ExtendedUIHoverTime DWORD to effectively disable taskbar thumbnail previews.
