I wish to upgrade from Win 10 Pro to Win 11 Pro using Rufus while keeping my apps and settings. When I booted from my usb I could not see this option. I could only see the option to do a clean install.

Is there a way to do an upgrade install using Rufus? I am testing unsupported hardware so that's why I want to use Rufus.

First make sure you back up your system. One never knows if something is going to go wrong. Then follow what @GusGhanem posted.

To do a clean install you boot from the Win 11 installation drive.
To do an upgrade from Win 10 Pro to Win 11 Pro, under Windows, run Setup.exe from the Win 11 installation drive.

If you have done the Win 11 installation drive using Rufus, under Windows, run Setup.exe from the Win 11 installation drive.
Another option is to use FreeBooster video to upgrade. Use option 1

The short version?
1. Download the latest ISO <- Link (Create Windows 11 Installation media, but chose ISO when Media Creation Tool Asks)

Thank you all for your replies. I have made the Rufus USB with the options to bypass hardware requirements.

However when setup runs the option to "Keep Apps" is greyed out and I can't select it. What am I doing wrong?

Update. I also tried Freebooster's two methods.

For the first method, when I typed in cmd, "F:\sources>setupprep.exe /product server" I got a message that, "access is denied".

The second method using the bat file proceeded well. However during installation the option to keep files and apps is greyed out. The same error I got with Rufus. I wonder if I am using the wrong Win 11 iso file? I am using the "International" version. Or is there is something else I am doing wrong?

So far I am stumped! Your advice would be appreciated.

Personally I use Rufus, I know of no bat file or other methods, I find them unnecessary.

Make sure your using Rufus v4.6

In reply to Megahertz, I forgot to use cmd as administrator. Maybe that's why access was denied.

In reply to Antspants, I used the media creation tool to download the correct ISO. (Note the media creation tool only worked after running FreeBooster's bat file to alter the registry. Before that, it showed an error that my PC was incompatible and did not proceed)

So now I am ready to do an upgrade install keeping my apps accepting the online updates. .. And I get this message that if I install Win 11 I will not receive any windows updates. So before I proceed, I thought I would ask for advice. The whole point of installing Win 11 is to continue to receive updates on my PC after the October 2025 deadline. I wonder if I should not have accepted the option to install with the latest online updates?

So that means you created a USB with media creation tool? Or you got media creation tool to simply download the ISO, there are two choices, create USB or download as ISO. Download the ISO only and create with Rufus 4.6

And no, don't let it check for updates during the Upgrade, in fact disable the internet altogether?

However I said all the above in my how to in post 6. If you followed that properly (even just the short version at the bottom) then I don’t know what has happened. But I did say not to allow updating during the install process in that post.

Thank you Antspants for the further advice. I gave up using a usb. It was a lot easier to use the ISO. I downloaded the ISO file to my desktop and mounted and launched setup. This time I opted to install Win 11 without getting the latest updates. I received the same error message again. Yes it will allow me to upgrade to Win 11 keeping my files and apps. But I have to agree that I will not receive any updates. Maybe setup has detected my older i7 4790 cpu is unsupported.

I wonder if that means I will not receive any security updates or just not MAJOR updates? Still wondering how to proceed.

Two methods i mentioned are the ways to bypass Windows 11 24H2 hardware requirements i upload the video few days ago worked for me, i have no clue why it will not work for you.

At this time, that means the major updates are the issue, and you will have to jump through the hoops next year when 25h2 is released.
Monthly updates are no problem at this time unless MS does something new and different.

Thank you Freebooster. The video was very helpful. I used the bat file method. It did not work with the International ISO. It DOES work with the ISO downloaded by the media creation tool (USA English). In my case the problem is different. I still have the option to install Windows 11 apps on an unsupported PC. But the setup message says that I will not receive any updates. That is what I am concerned about. Maybe the installation is detecting that I have an unsupported processor.

Thank you Porthos. If I can receive the monthly updates, then that is promising. I suppose if I install 24H2 now, then I will need to install 25H2 only using an ISO file. It will not automatically install from Windows update.

In the meantime I found this info.

I may decide to test windows 11 and see how I get on. I wish to thank you all for your help and advice.
