Hello Everyone, this is my first post.

When I connected a external USB drive (WD elements) to my USB3.0 port, I noticed that it didn't go to power save. When checking the box in the device manager to make my computer allow the USB device to be shut down, it goes to power save after only 1 minute. This makes the device hard to work with since it's powering down all the time. When hitting pause on a video, or trying to reach it over the home network. My question to you is how I can extend the time before shut down from 1 minute to at least 10 minutes, or a time limit of my choice? Any help would be appriciated.

The screen shots of the device manager are in swedish, but I think you get it. :-)

I wish you a nice evening /M

Welcome to the forum. You have not completed the specs portion of your forum profile so I do not know what device you are using.
The same thing was happening to me as my drive was recognized as a usb device rather than a hard disk. . I had to set USB selective suspend to disabled to solve my problem. Know that if you are using a laptop on battery power, this will affect your battery life.
  1. On your keyboard, press the Windows key + X and select Control Panel.
  2. Click Hardware and Sound, then click Power Options.
  3. Click Change plan settings for the plan you want to change.
  4. Click Change advanced power settings.
  5. Click the plus sign (+) next to “USB settings” and “USB selective suspend setting” to expand the options and change the setting to Disabled.
  6. Click OK to apply the setting.

Thank you very much. I've now filled in some specs. It's a desktop. Unfortunally it didn't work. The Disk shows up in the device manager but, It doesn't power off. Skärmbild 2023-03-21 192426.png

It doesn't power off.
No, with settings as above it won't power off because power is never removed from the usb ports. It's on all the time. I usually have multible external drives plugged in at once(all WD). Mine are not recognized as hard disks but as scsi devices. I was just sick of messing with them not being available when I wanted and didn't care that they were on on all the time. It's all in how your system recognizes the disk.
If it is being recognized as a disk drive reverse the above procedure regarding usb. Then try using the properties of the drive. (see screenshot)

If you still can't get it to work as you want see if this video might lead you in the right direction. Read the remarks below the video.

Thank you, but my drive has external power. Thanks also for the video link, but it doesn't get me closer... bugger ;-(

Thanks, I tried it but the software doesn't support the WD Elements drive.

The answer I got from WD support is that there's no way to control the sleeping time of these drives (WD Elements). There I go. Thanks for the input.
