How To Make Windows 11 Like Window 10?

Windows 11 Pro
I use windows 11 pro and used to use windows 10 pro. The start menu is not the same on windows 11. Not only that... the most frustrating thing is how does it not have the never combine tasks option? Example say I have 10 chrome tabs. Say each chrome tab has 5 tabs within the tab. Well normally you can click on either of the 10 chrome windows on the taskbar and then go to whichever one pretty easily. Now there is just single chrome icon where you click on it and then it shows you a preview of your chrome tabs. How in the world is this acceptable and whose idea was this? I want to be able to view each individual chrome tab on the bottom taskbar.

When I used a chromebook years ago, I found it having one chrome tab at the bottom very annoying. But at least when you click on it you see the name of each chrome tab. With windows 11, you get like a preview of each chrome window? So I tested opening several chrome windows and when I click on the chrome logo on the taskbar you see a bunch of the chrome preview but it is like a small version of it. This is even worst than how the chromebook did it.

Now how do you fix this issue? When I use another program, I would have lot of windows like similar to multiple chrome tabs and this would be inexcusable. I check online and there are programs like start11 and startallback. But are these 1 time payments or is it a monthly payment for it? There is also explorerpatch that seem free. Is that good?

Now with these programs, any concern of lagging or ram causing issues?

How can anyone here even use windows 11 without the option to never combine taskbar?

the best way and most stable is to use win10 insted of win11 there is no need to force yourself to use something you dont like

I got a new Dell Vostro Notebook a year ago and a new Dell Vostro Desktop in April, both came with Win10 Pro with the free license/Upgrade for Win11. Both cost a bit under what a gaming machine is but I'm not a gamer. I do prefer the business-class machines over the consumer types. Since the Product Key feature is part of the motherboard one may not need to purchase a copy of Win10, it's still available using the MCT process.

No need to buy a key. A digital license will be assigned to Windows 10 automatically based on 11 being stored in UEFI. 10 and 11 license are interchangeable.

No need to buy a key. A Win 11 key equals a Win 10 key. In other words, Windows 10 and 11 keys are interchangeable. If you have a license for one, you have a license to use the other in its place.

EDIT: Ooops. Sorry, glasskuter. Just noticed that you already responded to this :-). Missed that for some reason.

Wait so I could have installed windows 10 pro earlier in the first place? When I first set up the laptop, I didn't see this option. There isn't suppose to be an option right?

So how would I install windows 10 pro now on my laptop? The thing is I did install several programs on my laptop so I don't want to do a clean reinstall.

I find it annoying there is no option to choose never combine tabs etc.

1. So If i wanted to use windows 10 pro in first place, set up windows 11 pro as is. Then download the windows 10 file on usb flash drive? Then plug it into dell xps 15 9520 to do a clean reinstall but I get windows 10 pro?

2. Well i already set up windows 11 pro not that long ago and downloaded several programs already. So what is the best option here? What about those start11 or similar programs where it make your windows 11 like windows 10? Wouldn't that be the easier way?

3. You say with windows 11 pro, i have keys to both windows 11 pro and windows 10 pro? So I could reinstall my laptop many times later on and choose between either 10 pro or 11 pro?

Because if I knew this, I would have set up windows 10 pro in the first place. I was told by others to just use windows 11 pro. What is the best course of action now? I also use bitlocker as well.

1. yes
2. Using third party apps is your choice. A clean install is the only way to truly go back to Windows 10.
3. yes, You can reinstall either one as many times as you want. Making a backup image and restoring it also works or installing one OS on a separate hard drive that can be installed at will. However changing out hardware is not easy in today's modern laptops so restoring a backup image makes more sense to me.

I would think you would have to turn off bitlocker before you could install a different OS. I do not use it so I've never tried a clean install on a bitlocked drive.
Best course of action...your personal choice. Either go back to what is familiar or adapt. In 3 years if you want to run a supported OS you will have to be running 11, so it's a question of adapting now or later. But if one is going to run windows, we have to make adjustments to the way things are done in computing. Change is inevitable. Learn to accept it.

I just want to clarify this one point. You do not need to install Win 11 first. If EITHER Win 10 or Win 11 was ever installed on that system, you can then install either Win 10 or 11 on that system at any time. As far as licensing is concerned, Win 10 and Win 11 are one and the same and there is no differentiation.

Just be aware that this applies to the same edition of Windows. For example, if you had Win 10 Home installed, and you then decide you want to install 11, it would need to be Win 11 Home as well. Also, you can upgrade from 10 to 11 without having to perform a clean install, but to go backwards you need to perform a clean install. Of course, you could also do a clean install of 11 - there is nothing that says that to go from Win 10 to 11 it must be an upgrade. A clean install is always fine.

Hope that clarifies things a little bit!

As a caveat to others (been there, done that), don't waste your time and have your PC/Windows 11 become either unstable or a major annoyance by installing third party applications like Startisback or Classic Shell.

I am talking about my new dell xps 15 9520 that has windows 11 pro. I never used it. Thus it never had windows 10 etc.

But since I already set it up... and don't want to do a clean reinstall and use windows 10, my only options are

1. Adapt to this windows 11 pro

2. Clean reinstall windows 10 pro on it. Now if i choose to do this method, you just plug the windows 10 usb flash drive to it and press that button at the beginning of the dell logo to do it right? Now here is the bigger question. After you do a clean reinstall.. will dell recognize all the drivers or there is a chance it won't? For example is it possible the wifi adapter driver isn't there... so now you need to use another computer to download the wifi drivers just so you could access wifi on the computer?

The thing is it doesn't have the never combine windows option. This is beyond ridiculous for anyone that has lot of chrome tabs and use programs. I don't know how anyone can even use their laptop when it is like this. But someone here says avoid 3rd party software like startisback or classic shell? Then how else will I get the never combine windows option?

So it seems there is

Start11
Startisback
Explorer Patch

So there is also

Classic shell
Open Shell

Is that correct? Any experiences with this? Well you say I will eventually have to adapt later on. I would prefer that. But I also don't want to do a clean reinstall of my xps 15 9520 windows 11 pro etc. What is my best option? Seems like 3rd party is best option?

I have to have the never combine windows option. I can care less about the start menu not looking like windows 10 pro.

newmann, before I respond to all your questions, let me ask one question: What CPU is in that system?

You can goto Start > Settings > System > About and it will tell you.

I think that I may have found out the answer to my own question. You can confirm this, but it looks to me like that laptop probably has 12th gen CPU options. If you are indeed running a 12th gen CPU I would strongly suggest AGAINST running Windows 10. Windows 11 introduced a new thread scheduler that knows how to handle the power and efficiency cores of the 12th gen and newer CPUs. Windows 10 does not have that capability. The result may be reduced overall performance and / or a reduction in battery life.

As for the browser tabs on the taskbar, bear with me. I know I saw a setting related to that but I'm having difficulty locating it. If I find it, I'll respond back.

Ahhh yes, found what I was looking for. I was wrong, it was actually a setting that determines how many tabs from the browser are shown when pressing ALT + TAB.

But let me ask a question. Suppose you move the mouse pointer down to Chrome on the taskbar. A preview icon pops up above the taskbar. You can now move the pointer over that preview and get a full sized preview of that Window including all the tabs. You can select that windows or choose to slide over to another browser preview and see what tabs are on it. Does that not allow you to do what you are trying to accomplish?

I'm just trying to understand!

@newmann See my post above.
So it seems there is

Start11
Startisback
Explorer Patch

So there is also

Classic shell
Open Shell

Is that correct? Any experiences with this? Well you say I will eventually have to adapt later on. I would prefer that. But I also don't want to do a clean reinstall of my xps 15 9520 windows 11 pro etc. What is my best option? Seems like 3rd party is best option?

newmann, before I respond to all your questions, let me ask one question: What CPU is in that system?

You can goto Start > Settings > System > About and it will tell you.

You have 128GB of RAM?? Most of us have 16 and 32GB if not less.

In my view there's not much point going back to Windows 10 solely for the fact that Windows 11 has those kinds of annoyances. Install Open-Shell 4.4.170 first. In its settings window, I highly recommend choosing the Windows 7 style option for the Start Menu. You won't get tiles like you got on Windows 10, but then, tiles were designed with only touchscreen users in mind. Each time when I buy a new laptop, Open-Shell is among the first progams I install. I have actually been using it for 13 years, back then it was still called Classic Shell. For me, this has got absolutely nothing to do with making Windows look like older Windows. It's all about getting the steering wheel back after some Microsoft executive with ego problems had decided to steal it from us. There are no other reasons why I use programs like this. The same with ExplorerPatcher. I have been using it alongside Open-Shell for a year. Another typical example is called Battery Mode. It doesn't need an explanation, its mere existence alone speaks volumes of why I said what I said about steering wheels. Finally, there's also the TranslucentTB app from the Microsoft Store. It can help to mitigate the distraction that is commonly caused by having icons with vibrant bright colors shown on the taskbar against a type of background that only tends to amplify that effect, much to the point of falling victim to eyesore that could have been avoided, easily, and anyway to begin with.
