I have an external Win 11 Pro (activated) that is dual booted with my laptop's SSD. The last successful Win 11 monthly update was August. Since then it fails with "something didn't go as planned". I have a Macrium Reflect full disc image, made after the August update, and restored back to that but no help. I've tried many suggestions to try and fix it but none help. I used the media creation tool and made an install flash drive to do an in-place repair/upgrade but that program detects the SSD as an SD card and aborts.

The SSD is the OS drive from my closed recording studio and can't be remade from scratch.

How do I do the in-place repair/upgrade on the external SSD? A user commented it was possible but didn't know how.

Boot into the os on the external. Try copy and paste the contents of the usb onto the drive in question and run it from there. You could also try running setup.exe in the sources folder instead of the one on the root

This was never a windows to go. It was originally the OS drive in a desktop. Just pulled out and installed in an SSD enclosure and the bootbcd created for dual booting. It has worked for a year and a half without any update problems. Just started having problems with the monthly updates (september, october and november).

Sometimes your system recognized an external USB SSD as internal then it works as you stated. From Disk management,
if recognized as Removable then You are using external SSD as windows to go.
You need to add a registry entry on that Windows.
From your current Windows, from Admin command:
Reg load HKLM\yyy X:\Windows\System32\Config\System
Reg add HKLM\yyy\ControlSet001\Control /v PortableOperatingSystem /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
Reg unload HKLM\yyy

Replace X: with the letter pointing to your Windows to go SSD.

@Topgundcp Thanks but got the something didn't go as planned trying the drive and the November Win 11 update.

Back to trying to find a way to do an inplace repair/upgrade. It did all the 2024 monthly updates and the 2025 monthly updates through August.

EDIT/ADDED: I also tried the Windows 11 repair/upgrade from a newly created media creation tool created flash drive and with the added registry entries it still thinks the SSD is a flash drive and aborts.

I don't think you can do anything as long as it is connected via USB. I would remove it from the enclosure and connect it internally in the PC, then boot from it.

At least its still bootable and I can use the recording studio apps if needed (and it was needed last month).

Hi JS....

Wish I could help you out, but it's over my head.

I immediately recognized your avatar from that other forum. I still read there (27 year member), but don't post anymore.

Hope you are doing well and still on the BE setup. Guess you have departed FLA?

@spapakons I considered installing it, but it's not standalone bootable. Not sure how to make it bootable.
As far as I understand it is a Windows installation that somehow could boot from USB. However now it is damaged and cannot. Windows don't support booting from USB unless it is a "Windows-to-Go" installation. If it is a "Windows-to-Go" installation it cannot be upgraded to a new version, and therefore you cannot do an in-place upgrade/repair. Your only option is to remove it from the USB enclosure (or adapter) and connect it inside the computer. Then try an in-place upgrade/repair. You may have to edit Registry to switch it to standard installation before upgrading. Then you can switch it back to "Windows-to-Go" so it can boot from USB. Modify this Registry key, 0 for standard, 1 for Windows-to-Go:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\PortableOperatingSystem

please try this.

create a Windows 25H2 bootable USB stick with Rufus

you will also need a download of Windows 25H2 ISO from Microsoft

once the bootable USB stick has been created with your preferred options
create a folder on the desktop of your external USB connected Windows system

name this folder, for example, 'Rufus 25H2 Upgrade'

now copy and paste the whole contents of the bootable USB stick
to this folder on your external USB connected Windows system.

#####
once that has completed open this folder 'Rufus 25H2 Upgrade'
and find and double click the setup.exe file.

when the upgrade window opens make sure 'get updates' is disabled
then click upgrade saving all files, folders and settings.

when the upgrade completes restart the windows external USB system.

This doesn't answer your request for a fix, but have you considered generating a new windows-to-go drive? I see several utilities online for doing that.

The SSD is the OS drive from my closed recording studio and can't be remade from scratch.

Second its bootable as part of dual boot but the Laptop's internal drive has the boot files. I've got to create the boot on the drive.

hence why you create the bootable USB with Rufus
then copy and paste the entire contents of this bootable USB stick
to a folder you created on the external Windows system.

once you have copied the contents to the folder on the external Windows system
browse to the setup.exe file within this folder and start the upgrade.

best of luck Steve ..

Steve, tried that, Windows tells me this does not meet requirements for Windows 11 and then reports the external drive as a flash drive then aborts.

I'm ready to abandon trying to upgrade. I've been effing with this since September. I only need it if a former recording studio client needs something and fortunately its only been a couple times.
