Good morning all,

How do I search for files that have the attribute "hidden" ?

Preferable with Win11 but if I have to third party software would also be an option.

Thanks

Thanks FB. That DOS command does a great job. But unfortunately not suitable for me. Is there a way to use file explorer, because after searching for these files I need to work with the located files ?

If you open File Explorer and click on the Search tab, there are some options to select, but not to search in hidden file. Either these are included automatically if you enable viewing them, or I am missing something. Someone else?

PS: I have set Windows 10 style in File Explorer using Explorer Patcher, I hope this works similarly with the default Windows 11 style.

Yes, he can enable viewing hidden files, but I am not sure if the hidden files are included in the results when he searches. I think yes, but I would do a test to verify it. Right-click on a file, such as a document, select Properties and then check the box to make it hidden. Now search for all files of this type (such as .docx) and see if the hidden file appears in the results. It should.

It's already been possible for much, MUCH longer than just the last couple of years actually.

I checked search options but could not find a setting related to what you wrote.
  • Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)":
    • Open File Explorer.
    • Go to the "View" tab and click on "Options" (or "Folder Options").
    • In the "View" tab of the Folder Options window, uncheck "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)".
    • Click "Yes" when prompted to confirm.
  • Select "Show hidden files, folders, and drives":
    • In the same "View" tab of Folder Options, select "Show hidden files, folders, and drives".
    • Click "Apply" and then "OK".
Next, just open a folder in File Explorer and paste the command
system.fileattributes:(2 OR 3 OR 6 OR 7 OR 34 OR 35 OR 38 OR 39) into the Search box. It will find all hidden files in that folder and its subfolders. It works on Windows Vista and later Windows versions. So no, AFAIK nothing has changed over the past 17 years and 9 1/2 months in this regard.
