A Hyper-V Virtual Machine of Win 11 Pro 64-bit v 21H2 running on Win 10 Pro 64-bit v 21H1 host
I have Win 11 Pro 64-bit version 21H2 on a Virtual Machine in Hyper-V on my Win 10 PC. I created this VM two weeks ago.

In my Win 11 VM, I had delayed the automatic updates for a few weeks, but I just now started my first Update using the general Update button, and it pulled in a number of updates, including a "Preview" version of an update for .NET 3.5 and 4.8.

How can I set my Updates NOT to pull in "Preview" updates automatically?

Thanks.

Only the Preview updates for cumulative updates seem to be marked as optional. As .NET does not update the OS itself MS don't seem to provide any way to refuse the .NET previews (.NET is more like the C++ redistributables, only ever loaded when an app that requires .NET is running).

.NET is an optional feature. You could remove it, you shouldn't get updates for it then - but you'd also have a number of apps that would stop working.

Bree - so there's no way to set Update to block Preview updates for .NET? That's lousy.

By the way, the one that just installed is 2021-10 Cumulative Update Preview for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8 for Windows 11 for x64 (KB5006363).

Thanks.

To block an update you can use Windows Update Show/Hide Tool to hide it. But let dotnet enabled, many applications rely on these components. Old applications even require to enable dotnet 2/3 support, they simply don't detect higher versions. Any update for dotnet either old versions or current usually are security patches, so do them all!

....just wondered if .net needed and what does it do.
.NET Framework provides a library of functions and APIs that software developers can call from their app. It is only used when such an app calls for it. Without it these apps can't run. ShowKeyPlus is an example of one such app.
Dependency:
  • .Net Framework 4.6.1 or higher.

Legacy DirectX 9.0c Runtime includes some old DirectX files required by older games and photo/video editing software. The installer requires dotnet 2/3 enabled and prompts for this feature if not already present. A utility that changes the default shortcut arrow icon with a custom icon doesn't install without dotnet 2/3 enabled. These are a few examples that I remember. And as I always say, it is better to have some extra features and not use them than miss features you need. So I always enable some stuff, provided they do not affect performance.

@Porthos, so you`re saying you never check for updates ?
Just do not manually check. All these previews will be part of the next patch Tuesday which by default is automatic.
If you wish to check manually wait until the second Wednesday.
MS has said for a long time now by checking for updated manually makes you a "seeker". Someone who likes to have early access to some updates.

.NET Framework provides a library of functions and APIs that software developers can call from their app. It is only used when such an app calls for it. Without it these apps can't run. ShowKeyPlus is an example of one such app.
Thanks @Bree I assumed it was something like that, I can't understand why someone would want to get rid of it

As long as it doesn't affect system performance, leave it enabled to avoid any incompatibilities you may introduce if you disable it. I would worry only if I had a really old and very slow system. In that case I would try to disable as many services as I can to make it faster. If you have a fast computer, don't bother.

I got a very fast system, so I never get any problems, but why would someone want to remove .net framework. when you start stopping services running I am sure you lead to probems further down the line

If you remove features without knowing what you are doing, is like asking for trouble. You can never be sure of the dependencies of other components on these features and all applications that expect certain components to function will just fail. You may even have a BSOD. If it works, don't fix it, as wise people say.
