I'd like to know how I've done it. The first is with PIN and enter, probably using Microsoft, but others have OEM info. All have Windows 23H2 up to date.
I'm not bothered but I would like to know what I've done.

Are you sure the first one is a PIN and not a password? You should only need to press Enter for a password. The second one with the PIN and straight in is how a PIN is supposed to work. The third one may just be a local account that has no password, if so it should just go straight to the desktop at startup.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

As a user you're free to setup your authentication as you like, so why do you have three different methods? Because you set it that way. You're free to change them to different methods or change them to match if that's easier to manage you can even have multiple methods to authenticate per device.

Go into Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options to change your authentication methods

You cannot set up a PIN without first setting a password.

If the 3rd one has a PIN but goes straight in, then you may have set up automatic sign in.

When You setup a login profile with your Microsoft Account, it asks for your Microsoft Password, it then suggests you can use a PIN instead.
So, each computer that has a PIN login, has a password too.
If you go to Search or Press Windows key +R and type netplwiz and press Enter. You can choose to login to the computer without typing a password, if you have Local account that you created.

To press enter after typing your pin at the login screen? I don’t think so. Afaik there is no way to enable or disable that function as it is not a normal function. Pressing enter after typing a password is, but not a pin.

I looked at the PIN and I found the password is actually the PIN! All the time I have been typing the password and using it as the PIN. I even saw the word password instead of PIN. I apologise to everyone.

If your Windows Hello PIN contains a special character (mine includes a !), Windows will require you to press Enter after entering the PIN. If no special character, no need for Enter. Viola.

If your Windows Hello PIN contains a special character (mine includes a !), Windows will require you to press Enter after entering the PIN. If no special character, no need for Enter. Viola.
You know, I can't find that detail documented anywhere on Microsoft, so I tested it for myself. You have solved the mystery, thank you. (y)

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop.
