I Keep Getting Disconnect Sounds

Hi all,

My PC is quite frequently making USB disconnect sounds. Under Power Options (through control panel) I have set USB selective suspend setting to disabled.

It still does it.

Does anyone have any advice as to what is going on here?

Thanks. I just disabled them. Hopefully, that will fix the issue.

This probably happens when a USB devices doesn't receive enough power. Try connecting a device at another port and see if the problem persist. Then try another device and another until you find the culprit. The rear USB ports usually are more stable than the front ports, try using them first before using the front ones.

This is a bit stupid, but I just realised it's the connect sound, not disconnect.

No idea what is going on.

I have been plagued for years with that merry little tinkle moments after Windows has finished boot up. It is the same sound I get if I mistakenly jiggle a USB cable and temporarily drop a device. But I can't track it down. I admit I have many USB connected devices, of varying ages. I can't see any part of my file system missing. And it happens so quickly - a brief jingle down quickly followed by a jingle up. I would love to have some trouble shooting expertise to be able to track it down.

You have to connect one device at a time to see which device does that. However, if it is related to power, it won't do it alone. It does it when many other devices draw too much power and is not enough available for the specific device. Hard to tell.

Have you checked the event viewer? Many devices will log status when they connect.

I have from time to time tried to make sense out of event viewer. I start looking, narrowing my time frame down to a particular event, and hours later I've made no progress. I don't think that event viewer has ever enlightened me to the source of an issue. I just plain don't understand it. There is way too much chatter in there and the messages mean nothing to me.

Probably the logs are deleted/overwritten every some days.

With a 1TB boot device I think I will fade out long before the device fills up.

Apparently the logs are indeed limited, you can set the limits using gpedit.
