I no longer get a notification when I attach a USB disk?

Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean.

Uninstall Windows Update Preview KB5039302
It's a preview (like a beta) it's not the final release, unless I am mistaken.

I've had that in the past - some weird update obviously hoses something up.

I think it's all OK again on the latest Canary build -- however with these "Random updates" anything can (and does) happen.

Cheers

Consider uninstalling that preview just to see what happens, swerd.

OK. I uninstalled the update. No luck, I'm afraid. There is still no notification when I plug in a USB HDD. I have backups, but all but my most recent are useless and unrecoverable because I repartitioned my boot disk a few days ago.

Now the update is gone, how do I stop receiving "preview" updates? I unselected "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available" and the update is still there.

Cheers

You can't really, you just don't click to install them. they don't install automatically, they are optional.

There is a reg key hack somewhere but I forget where I found it.

As for the update and you've turned off 'get the latest......' try selecting 'Pause for 1 week' then turning it back on. I might clear it.

Another couple of suggestions for safely remove, go to Settings- Apps- 'Choose defaults by link type' and scroll sown to MS-XGPUEJECT and check safely remove device is default.

Last suggestion (more of a workaround if it works) create a shortcut on the desktop for it. Right click the Desktop - New - Shortcut and copy and paste RunDll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll in the location box. Rename it Safely Remove Device or whatever. See what happens with that.

Why would you need to do that for a preview? If you don’t want it don’t click install.

Try this:

(1) Open RegEdit
(2) Go to HKEY_CURRENT_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
(3) See if a DWORD called EnableBalloonTips exists. If it doesn't, create it.
(4) Set the value of EnableBalloonTips to 2.
