In Settings/Apps/Startup, I toggle Thunderbird to On, but it reverts to Off at the next startup and the programme doesn't start up. This is fairly new behaviour - any ideas? I also have it in shell:startup

Hi Freebooter, No it doesn't - that's why I need to turn it on - I've also got it in shell:Startup

Try reinstalling the program or use the Task scheduler to start the application.

Hi Freebooter, I don't want to reinstall, as Thunderbird has so many settings you need to set up, as well as your email accounts and their settings. I never thought of starting up the computer and going to Task Manager, so I'll try to remember that for next time I need it. I'm not sure why, but it's now working after I put a Thunderbird shortcut into shell:commonstartup - the button in Apps/Startup stays toggled to On and the programme opens. We'll see!

Reinstalling Thunderbird does not change such items as your email accounts, which are separate from the program. In the Tools menu, there are entries for Settings and Account Settings, which show how you have set the relevant items. In Help, there is an entry for Troubleshooting Information, which opens a screen with multiple entries, among which is "Open Folder," which will show you your Profile, which contains a myriad of Tb settings, even the name of the profile that you are using (you can have multiple settings.)

Hi Not Myself. I'm currently in the strange position of having two entries for TB in Settings/App/Startup. Since I'd had no luck with starting up TB from Apps/Startup, I'd put it into shell:startup and it didn't work. I then also put it into shell:common startup and got it to startup, but all messages are now in duplicate and I have one Apps/Startup/TB checked and the other one not!
As I've mentioned before, all Uninstall programmes list two versions of TB from the same date, but I've been told to ignore this
Are you suggesting uninstalling and reinstalling TB or just reinstalling over the top? I'm busy doing a full backup, as I've a suspicion I was told I'd not lose my settings before and did lose them.

The usual approach is to simply install a new copy of Tb over the existing copy. That someone told you that you would lose your settings was not giving you correct information, but you should have full backups as a regular part of your computing. I use Macrium Reflect, and have it set to do full backups of my C:\ and D:\ drives weekly, with interim backups every day.

The best place in the world to find wrong information is the Internet....

Instead of using Task Manager, try to add a shortcut of Thunderbird to your startup folder.
