Now that I'm using W11, I see IE is still being used by Windows. IE files keep showing up every time CCleraner is run. I was under the impression IE was going away?

IE is needed for Edge's IE mode and for any apps that use IE via COM (e.g. to display an HTML help file).

iexplore.exe doesn't just spontaneously run. If it's in the task list, something called it, such as an IE Mode page in Edge or an older app that uses IE to display HTML content.

There aren't that many now. If you look at the ones CCLeaner finds you'll see that they are often for other apps besides IE11. For example, this one is the 'mostly cloudy' image used by Widgets on my taskbar.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

Yes, since we don't use IE, nor any form of Edge, and I see all of these temporary files show up in CCleaner, I assume W11 is using these browsers for something. I just assumed it would stop using IE, but maybe it will take time.

There are still a lot of programs that use IE in the background to drive part of the GUI. IE is only a security risk when used directly as a browser (which is pretty hard to do now), so best to leave it alone and not worry about it.

After watching what files CC deletes regarding IE, it looks like nearly all of them are related to the news pin on the task bar. I guess some day MS will rewrite that little app to use a different browser.
