The title phrase suddenly appeared in my All Apps list last Friday (22 July 22) and I have no idea how it got there or what I'm supposed to do with it.

It shows up in the Settings/Apps list as only 76 kb. Would someone else who has (or had) this thing tell me what it's for and whether I can just uninstall it?

My PC is optane capable but I do not have an optane module installed. However, I do have the Optane app installed as it came from Dell that way. Although I feel it's fine to uninstall it, I never did as it is part of RST 17.8 Driver/Application package which was the last to contain the applications
  • Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST) User Interface
  • Intel® Optane™ Memory User Interface
Going forward, IRST 117.9 will include a different installer and will remove this application. Per Intel this version of IRST will:
.
  • Configuration of the System BIOS for Intel® Optane™ Memory (as applicable).
  • Installation of the driver.
  • Uninstallation of legacy applications.
  • Start the download process of the Intel® Optane™ Memory and Storage Management application from the MS Store. (See below for more information.)

@glasskuter

How come I suddenly got it last week out of nowhere? I didn't do anything to install it, unless in-place repair counts.

Optane memory is one of the worst things I have come across in my opinion It stopped me from easily changing my test machine to dual boot. If you can get rid of do so would be my advice based solely on my experiences

Don't know. Check history to see if maybe WU installed any IRST driver newer than the one you were using prior to the inplace upgrade. Here's the specs for your Lenovo, you are capable of using optane.

Question @The-Hive What I know about optane wouldn't fill a teacup. If one does not have an optane drive (therefore being unable to pair with a another drive), how did it affect dual boot. Did you not turn off optane before you set up dual boot as per Intel notice?
@Wisewiz I noticed when I right click on the app there is an uninstall option but I wonder if by doing so would affect Ithe existing RST in any way. I do not think it would since Intel Optane is now a Microsoft app in the store.

This machine is not Optane and installed the dual boot from an iso saved to the desktop. My other machine is Optane and every time I tried the same sort of install it failed, I spent a few days trying to sort it. In the end NavyLCDR told me to download the Optane drivers on to a usb and then install from the desktop iso and it ask me then to install them from the USB before carrying on with the install

I'm betting a dollar to a donut it would have worked correctly had you cleared out the metadata, unpaired optane using the app, and then turned off optane in bios prior to setting up dual boot. This specifically says it is not supported and it makes sense as one partition could easily corrupt the other.

It is east to wise after the event but at the time I had no idea as dual booting was new to me and as I did it on one machine (without Optane) I didn't expect a lot of hassle

Well, before this thread turned into "Last One to Post Wins," we were discussing Optane.

I decided to make an image and then uninstalled it. It wasn't a "real" installation, anyway, at 76 kb total. The MS Store has it at multiple megabytes. Farewell, Intel Optane. That computer is already faster than greased lightning, and I have no HDDs in it, so I do not think the extra baggage would have made a noticeable difference.

Thanks.

Dan

Wisewiz, Just to be on the safe side (and to make me feel better) verify that optane acceleration is not enabled. I certainly don't want you to have any surprises later on. All the app does is configure optane. It can still be enabled even after the app is deleted. To an unsuspecting buyer, optane can put one in a world of hurt and they won't even know why because they don't even know they're using it in the first place.
You can't use option 2 as you removed the app. Methods 4 & 5 have been deprecated.

Interesting. I looked at my list of installed apps, and there it was. I too dislike looking at my list of apps and seeing something I didn't install.

I uninstalled it too.

@TraderGary The way I see it from reading Intel's articles, if one manually updates IRST, Intel says "During the installation of the Intel RST driver (version 17.9 and later) you will have an option to download and install the Intel® Optane™ Memory and Storage Management application from the Microsoft Store" but since both you and Dan ended up with the app, it would appear WU downloads it automatically."But if that is the case, even if one uninstalls it, it will probably be back at some point. I don't have to worry about that as I have driver updates disabled, but a lot of people do not disable driver updates. Having the app doesn't hurt anything as it is only a tool to configure optane, but it would be all to easy for a novice user who has a optane module to use the app to enable optane out of a lack of knowledge to what it really is. A computer should come with it disabled in bios by default, but mine did not.
Reference- Intel® Rapid Storage Technology and Intel® Optane™...

From everything I've read about it, I wouldn't have an optane drive in my system.
