You don't have to wait, I would bet HDMI 1.4 cannot do 120Hz. Better not risk it. You shouldn't see any difference with 60Hz anyway. What about using Display Port instead of HDMI? Does your graphics card have a Display Port output?

Nope 1.4 can do 144hz at 1080p. Its whether the motherboard of his PC supports it as the manufacturer says it doesn't. Hence the uncertainty

You don't have to wait, I would bet HDMI 1.4 cannot do 120Hz. Better not risk it. You shouldn't see any difference with 60Hz anyway. What about using Display Port instead of HDMI? Does your graphics card have a Display Port output?

I think there is a big difference between 60 and 120Hz... Where the difference doesn't matter for me since i am not a gamer is from 120 to 144.
The integrated GPU on my motherboard doesn't have display port. It has once 1.4 HDMI.

It terms of visual fidelity, I dont think theres a difference at all. However there is something to be said for "feeling it".
Example : I used to play Counter strike locked at 60fps, I now play unlocked at 350fps. Now i cant see a difference..but the imput lag for starters getting from vsync is gone and theres more frames, so it feels much much smoother. Guess its a feeling and not a seeing kinda thing.
I personally dont care for it now, Il always go quality/resolution over refresh rate. Im fine with 60. Mostly important for competitive games.
Yeah itll feel a bit smoother kicking about the desktop and doing you're dailies but other than that.

Ive used a 144hz screen before( Wasn't mine). It felt smoother browsing and stuff for sure, but that was it. A bit nicer. A good to have but not essential for me.

My current monitor is almost 13 years old and i was thinking of getting a new one. And i thought to my self it would be a shame not to get a higher framerate one. By the way for non gamers what panel would you choose? IPS or VA?

Ive used a 144hz screen before( Wasn't mine). It felt smoother browsing and stuff for sure, but that was it. A bit nicer. A good to have but not essential for me.
In my youth I learned that humans cannot see light flicker faster than 30 Hz.
Nowadays, some people are saying they can see light flicker at 60 Hz.
Nobody has reported seeing light flicker at 120 Hz.
So why are screens getting faster?
It is to do with animation. To make animation look like real motion, then faster refresh rates are desirable. This is because perception of animation is different to perception of light flicker.
But if you do not do animation and games, then 120 Hz seems the desired limit.

Playing unlocked at 350fps doesn't mean your monitor actually shows these frames, it rounds them to the nearest possible frame for the frame rate, usually 60Hz (60fps). Higher rate monitors are only needed for very fast action gaming and even then you might not notice any difference. What you notice is the absence of stuttering that sometimes is visible in 60Hz when the monitor cannot keep up with the fast frame rate of the game. That's why technologies such as V-Sync attempt to lock the frame rate or technologies such as AMD Free-Sync attempt to synchronize the game frame rate with a range of frame rates a compliant monitor supports (usually 40Hz to 60Hz). Keep in mind that using a high rate monitor such as 120Hz or 144Hz may make you feeling sick the first time, until you get used to this high rate.

Does anybody know if a monitor that supports 165Hz refresh rate is backwards compatible with 144Hz and 120Hz without loosing quality like running a monitor at its not native resolution?

Assuming the monitor also supports these refresh rates, you should not have any problems. You should not notice any difference in image quality.

Actually that was what i was wondering. Are there monitors out there that support lets say 165Hz but not 120Hz?

It would not make sense. If it can go up to 165Hz, it should also support all other smaller refresh rates. You can also check the technical specifications before buying.
