Is anyone interested in seeing a write-up on how to add your system drivers to a Windows 11 ISO image?

I am considering writing a post describing step-by-step how to add all the drivers for a system into your Windows ISO image. This will allow you to have all the drivers for your system preinstalled when performing a clean install of Windows. This would also allow you to add the drivers for ALL of your systems to a single Windows image so that the same image could be used to install Windows on any of your systems with all drivers already included in the package.

What I need to know is whether anyone would be interested in seeing this. I will only bother to write this up if this is something that someone can actually use. I just like to ask in advance simply because it is a bit of work to put this all together :-).

    The five 8TB drives and three 512GB SSDs are part of a DrivePool using StableBit DrivePool software. The three SSDs are devoted purely to caching for the 8TB drives. All of the important data is stored in triplicate so that I can withstand simultaneous failure of 2 disks.

I always think of useful ideas such as this one as being tools in a toolbox. I could see this being handy for clean installs. Perhaps also useful for repair’s too.

I think it would be useful if it can be done within windows environment without using third party tools that need payment.
Else, windows would automatically install all the update drivers through its updates ?

My procedure does not require any third-party utilities, although I do have an OPTIONAL step that does make use of a third-party utility.

Windows is pretty good at adding a lot of drivers after the installation, but it is by no means all-inclusive. There are many things not served up by Windows update.

There are a couple of other things to take into account:

1) What if Windows does not include a driver for your network adapter? In that case Windows won't be able to go to Windows update to get any drivers.

2) What about "boot critical" drivers? For example, drivers necessary to install Windows. If you are missing these, you will have to manually load these during installation in order to even be able to perform the installation.

In any case, thanks all for the feedback. I'll get this written up and posted as soon as I can. May take a day or two.

True that ! I did have such a problem once, had to go to some other system, download drivers and install to get internet !

Yes, sometimes in this forum itself, we get lot of queries when windows does not recognize M2 SSD devices to install !

What I meant was just adding drivers to a folder in an USB would be easy, but if you have to create an ISO image out of that, I have not been able to do it easily !

I thought for sure that Kari must have a tutorial on this topic, but for some reason I wasn't finding it. I'll take another shot at looking in the morning.

Wow, how weird. For the life of me, I could not find this before, but coming back to it fresh now, I found the tutorial almost immediately.

Thanks, cereberus, for reminding me of this.

NOTE: Kari's tutorial covers adding standard drivers to a Windows image, but it does NOT cover adding Boot Critical drivers needed by Setup. Maybe I'll just create a separate lesson on that topic.

EDIT: IMPORTANT - This is not working with 24H2 as yet. There appear to be issues related to the "new setup" in 24H2 so I may not be able to resolve those until the final release of 24H2. Specially, injecting Windows updates into 24H2 is what is not working yet. Everything else appears to work just fine with 24H2.

Yeah - the extra trick is boot critical drivers should be added to boot.wim as well as install.wim
@Kari wrote that tutorial before NVME drives were common.

I have a long batch file that does lots of things but one of its functions is to install critical drivers into boot.wim and any other drivers into install.wim. It is quite customisable. It is set up to run off drive E but can be changed to any drive including C. I have documented key directories needed at beginning.

Basically, you mount a windows 11 iso, add drivers (critical ones in boot.wim as well as install.wim), the you can select options, which sku (numbers are not sku numbers but simple a menu number to select sku by name). You can the create an iso with drivers and/or install it in a vhdx file to nsative boot vhdx file.

You do need some adk stuff installed as described in @Kari's tutorial.

Virtually everything in batch file was based on @Kari's tutorials. The only bit I added really was adding drivers to boot.wim.

Process a SKU by SKU name - F drive GPT or MBR W11.cmd

With some slight mods, you can change install.wim to a custom install.wim from one pc, add drivers to custom.wim from a new pc that then creates an iso with all apps from old pc, so in effect you can transfer OS to new pc and it works first time. Only slight wrinkle is I found it is better to uninstall onedrive on old pc, create custom image, then install onedrive on new pc (and reinstate on old pc),

I had that happen once. It's been so long ago that I forget what computer and OS it happened on. It may have been back in my Linux days. To solve my problem I had to buy a cheap USB Wi-Fi adapter. I would be interested but not enough for you to go through all the time and effort I imagine it would take.

Hello,
1. I prepared bootable usb using Wim Tools v 23.0.0.261, after having installed Windows 10 ADK and ADKWinPE addons full. I used Windows 10 Pro.
2. Downloded Windows 11 iso using media creatition tool from Microsoft official website. Iso has install.wim
3. Placed Windows 11 iso configuring to boot as first image iso.
4 After booting it displays dialog box "Install driver to display hardware" The image attached herewith.The message seems to be from Microsoft stating to install the driver to make you hardware disoverable.Same message on dell inspiron laptop when booted from this drive.
5. I have dvd writer in my desktop pc from which bootable dual layer dvd of Windows 11 boots well without any error.
6. Finally how to proceed next?

Why not add the drivers to a bootable USB flash drive instead of Windows 11 ISO that is what i did at below video.
