Is Google Drive better than Onedrive?

I only have a 5GB limit on onedrive on my win 11 PC. I was thinking of getting google drive which is 15GB, 3x bigger storage. Is it worth it? Is it as safe as onedrive? I want to make sure that my stuff doesn't get hacked into by hackers since I have sensitive files.

Probably not if you are invested in the Office ecosystem.

OneDrive or GoogleDrive.. its the same security behind both cloud services.
Nothing online is 100% hack-proof.. data-leaks can happen in the future.. if it is do to a hacker, or do to someone messes up in the data-center.. only the future will tell that.
When storing really sensitive files on someone else computer.. or even an internal drive in a computer that is hooked up to internet.. nothing is 100% secure.. 99.8% secure is still a 0.2% risk we take when it comes to sensitive data.

So if you dont want to worrying about data-leaks.. i recommend you encrypt the files before uploading them to the cloud storage.
This way even if the data would leak.. its encrypted and totally useless for the bad actor that get hold of the files.

Just remember when encrypting files or disks, its really important with backups then as an encrypted file/disk is almost impossible to do a data-recovery on, even by professionals or even state agency's.. encryption is for protection, it dont have a recovery function.. if you lose passwords or encryption keys. encryption is there to protect someone to get hold of the content..

It behooves me to ask the question, "Better for who?". This is another one of those user preference situations where one might be preferred over another for different reasons. The answer is that it really depends on one's own preferences and what works best for them be it performance, economics, or even aesthetically. It's much like asking is an AMD computer better than an Intel computer? Again: It depends. What are all the variables? What are the economics? What do you value the most? What are your personal priorities?

Myself, I chose neither. That is my preference.

You're obviously looking at comparing free storage limits so there's not really any choice

As @Marie SWE outlines, not much difference in the security, between the two.

One thing to consider, just have a look at the number of threads in multiple forums across the 'net from users who have problems managing OneDrive, especially to the stage of losing data because they didn't understand the underlying functionality of OneDrive. If you have to resort to extra paid storage, I'd preferably be looking at Google, rather than OneDrive.

And, as @Marie SWE says, backup, backup, backup. Encrypted data stored locally.

Neither should never be considered as a sole backup destination, both have traits where the service provider can invoke functions the user may not be familiar with, thus causing problems. Their ideal role is the sharing/accessing of data between devices in different locations.

They are pretty much the same. I have both for decades. The settings are rather more complex in Gmail using labels rather than folders, never really understood that, but they both work equally as well. OneDrive/Google Drive are not used for sensitive files, so safety is of less concern. I guess encryption is the way to go for that.

Why not use both?
That gives you 20GB storage

I'm using both, plus Dropbox.
I'm spreading different 'stuff' across them, docs, downloads, etc, and I've mapped them, so my file manager/browser sees them as drives.

Greatly appreciate your answer. How do i encrypt a file before I upload it to the cloud?

I think the best thing to do is encrypt the files, upload them to Google Drive, then back them up to a flash drive also.

Do you mean I should backup the passwords or encryption keys? Just copy these in some work file I assume? Sorry for the dumb questions, just nervous here
