the title say it will take 30 minutes as you can see in the attached screenshot image.
but actually, it's taking so far much longer.

does it logic and fine to take more than 30 minutes?

oh, now i saw that it says that it will restart the pc 30 minutes after reaching to 100%. what does it going to do after reaching 100% that it needs extra 30 minutes? isn't 100% meaning it finished ? if we need to wait more 30 minutes then it's not 100%.

anyway, hope to it will finish to prepare the usb this weekend.

    Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 15 years?
I never use the installation assistant. I create an installation usb using the iso. A windows install takes no more than 15 minutes, if that. I've never timed it.

Windows progress percentages have always been a lie. Ever copied a file? Yeah, that. It goes right along with the message "preparing to install updates." That's a Silicon Valley way of saying "we're not actually installing anything right now."

i guess it was my mistake. i downloaded the assistant file instead the media creation tool. so, i stopped it in the middle and downloaded the media creation tool. but then i found that the media creation tool of windows 11 make problems and crash with windows 10 pro. so now i downloaded the windows 11 iso file and using the rufus to create the usb bootable installation. a bit messed. sorry. now i'm waiting for the rufus to finish the operation.

What you saw is the percentage of the first stage (copying Setup files to disk and backup old Windows installation to Windows.old folder), not of the complete upgrade. Yes, it makes sense if you have a lot of data to backup before upgrading. After completing the first stage, Setup restarts the computer and proceeds to the second stage (upgrade to next Windows version). Unlike a clean installation that Setup simply copies files around, an upgrade takes much longer because Setup must backup/restore your account settings and other stuff and check all system files one-by-one and copy or replace as needed. This check takes time. After that it restarts once more for the third stage, installing drivers and then restarts once more for the OOBE stage (if upgrading from 10 to 11, otherwise it shows the login screen).

It just depends on so many factors e.g. age of pc, cpu type, hard disk type, jow much RAM, amount of free space, driver requirements. It can easily take up to 2 hours or more.

I once did a clean installation of Windows 11 23H2 on a Pentium 4 64-bit socket 775 (first Intel 64-bit CPU family). It took a couple of hours. I wouldn't like to find out how much time it would take to upgrade from a previous version. Almost double that.

From where are you getting the impression that what it is doing is preparing a USB? It is actually installing Windows. And that 30 minutes is the time before it will automatically reboot. There's nothing preventing you from rebooting immediately after it is done rather than waiting those 30 minutes.

DON'T force restart or the upgrade will fail and you will return to Windows 10, IF you are lucky and the old files are not removed from the Windows folder.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.

Yes, it's normal. Tho it helps (a lot - noticeably faster) - to have/use a fast USB-C stick, such as: Adata SC750 (this one is among the cheapest - among the high speed USB-C sticks).
