Solved Is my Windows 11 (Pro) permanently active (or is it temporary)?

Good morning everyone,

I have a bit of a dilemma. A couple of days ago I did a clean install of 25H2 from 23H2. Unfortunately, my Product key did not take.Activation attempt dedacted.webp I tried going through the MS help desk(?) (via using the SLUI 4 run line), but my device/HW ID was not accepted either. Nonetheless, I did use a generic key for Windows 11 Pro (don't have that key of the top of my head) after the installation. Now my Windows says it is Activated with a digital license (screenshot attached).Digitial license.webp

How do I know for sure that my Windows 11 is in fact permanently activated and not temporarily active due to using the generic key? Is there a way I can confirm that my Retail Product key is at work here?

It’s activated with a digital license so I’d say you’re good.
When clean installing Windows a user should skip entering a key, then once signed in with the correct account the PC will automatically reactivate.

That's what I thought, but it wasn't active after doing the install so I ended up using the generic key since my retail product key didn't take.

If the key was activated previously then the generic key would activate it - the key is the same for everyone & is tied to your specific PC/genuine Windows key.
Perhaps it required a few hours after the install for it to sync to your account or the servers, hence why the PC wasn’t activated immediately.

I bought a retail Product key when I initially installed Windows 11 Pro. When I proceeded to use the same product key after the clean install (of 25H2), I got an error stating that, "The product key you entered didn't work."

If I'm understanding your post correctly you bought a Pro key that you didn't need. Was the 23H2 build a Pro version and activated with a digital license? If it was the OS should have registered with MS and activated. For what ever reason it didn't activate the generic key was all you needed as you later found out. If you have a device running a Home version of Windows you can use the Pro key upgrade from Home to Pro.

Yes to your dual question. I did purchase a Windows 11 Pro version for the 23H2 installation (well to be honest, it wasn't 23H2 at the time of installation, it was something like 21H2(?), and it was activated later, but not with a digital license. That's why I bought the retail product key (of Windows 11 Pro).

The question is, where did you buy the retail key? Many places are selling bogus keys that don't activate when you go to use them!

That is a fair question. I bought my product key from RoyalCDKey. That (retail) product key did work with my initial (also a clean) install of Windows 11 Pro. So, I assume it was all good.

Some unscrupulous sellers sell the same key to several users and eventually MS catch up and the key gets blocked.

However, the resulting digital licence obtained upon first activation remains valid ad infinitum.

It is irrelevant if the key gets blocked as it is not needed again (unless you were trying to activate a new pc).
